Virginia Girls Soccer: Madison Falls to W-L After 4 Overtimes

Tuesday loss is the end of the season for the Warhawks.

If there's one thing Head Coach Grant Massey continues to say about his Madison High School girls soccer team, it's that the players can keep things close which "gives us a chance in every game," he said. That was true again Tuesday as the Warhawks held Washington-Lee to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation in the first round of Northern Region Playoff Brackets. And like the team's loss in the Liberty District tournament last week, Madison wasn't going to go out without a fight. The Warhawks fought through four overtimes Tuesday before ultimately losing 1-0, ending a season marked by close games that didn't always swing in Madison's favor. She vividly remembers going hungry as a child growing up in Dale City, and on a recent Sunday, she held a Zumbathon to raise money to fight hunger in the greater DC area.  "Nowadays, I hear families complain about going without name brands or eating out at fancy restuarants," Clark said. "When I was growing up right here in PWC, we went without hot water, electricity and food. I remember having nothing but…

Virginia Ranks 16th Most Bike-Friendly State

The state's policies and advocacy for cyclists earned it a high ranking from the League of American Bicyclists.

Virginia is one of the best states in the country to bike, according to new rankings from the League of American Bicyclists. But it still lags behind some other states in the Mid-Atlantic region. A combination of state policies and programs — including a state bicycle plan and a "Share the Road" campaign — and an active state bicycle advocacy group helped the state earn No. 16, behind places like Washington state, Colorado, Oregon and Massachusetts. Still, neighboring states fared better on the rankings list: Delaware was 5, Maryland was 11 and Pennsylvania was 15. The League created a list of 10 signs that show progress on bikeability for states, including more than 1 percent of the commuters using bikes, a measure of success Virginia …

Restaurant Inspections: No Violations Since 2011 At This Vienna Spot

Patch brings you the latest inspection reports from the health department.

Health Department restaurant inspection reports aren't quite as simple as getting a letter grade or an easy-to-see number rating to post in the front window. In Fairfax County, inspectors from the Virginia Department of Health grade restaurants based on critical and non-critical violations. Since our last round-up, the Taco Bell #18563, 8419 Old Courthouse Road was inspected — and given a clean bill of health by the department. An inspector found no violations in its most recent visit three weeks ago. The chain appears to have a history of impeccable inspections: It's last violation was a year and a half ago in December 2011, when an inspector reported the shop's ammonium compound sanitizing solution wasn't properly mixed. The full reports…
