In Northern Virginia Regional Tournament semi-final games, the Madison faithful were able to celebrate another doubleheader playoff win at home Wednesday night. Tuesday loss is the end of the season for the Warhawks.
If there's one thing Head Coach Grant Massey continues to say about his Madison High School girls soccer team, it's that the players can keep things close which "gives us a chance in every game," he said. That was true again Tuesday as the Warhawks held Washington-Lee to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation in the first round of Northern Region Playoff Brackets. And like the team's loss in the Liberty District tournament last week, Madison wasn't going to go out without a fight. The Warhawks fought through four overtimes Tuesday before ultimately losing 1-0, ending a season marked by close games that didn't always swing in Madison's favor. The Madison High School baseball team easily defeated Langley 11-2 on Monday to earn the 2013 Liberty District title — its eighth such title in just more than a decade. The win earns the Warhawks a top seed in the upcoming Northern Region tournament. After starting off the season with 3-2 loss to Fairfax, Madison came back with a win and hasn't looked back, going on to win 21 straight games including Monday's championship. Marshall falls to Langley in semifinals.
Madison High School's baseball team continued to roll Friday night as it shut out Stone Bridge High 11-0 in the Liberty District semifinals. The win (20-1) sets the Warhawks up for an appearance in the Liberty District championship game next week. Dan Powers pitched a 1-hitter to seal the victory, according to the Washington Post. Luke Belt ripped a home run. Madison will face the Langley Saxons (14-7) at 7 p.m. Monday at Madison for the championship. Madison has won seven district championships in the past 11 years. McLean scores winning goal in Liberty District semis.
Madison High School girls soccer coach Grant Massey anticipated his team's semifinal match Wednesday night against McLean would be a close game. But it seems hard to believe Massey would have anticipated how tight the game — which sends a winning team to the district championships — would actually be. And at the end of regulation Wednesday, Madison and McLean entered overtime to resolve a 0-0 tie. Still scoreless after the first overtime, they entered another. And another. And another. And during the fourth overtime, three minute away from when both teams would be forced to settle the game with penalty kicks, a McLean highlander scored, ending a hard-fought battle for the Warhawks as well as a 6-1 win streak. The loss kicks Madison (10-5) …
