If you're traveling by car this Thanksgiving in Northern Virginia, try to drive very early in the morning.
About 43.6 million people are planning to travel 50 miles or more for their Thanksgiving meal this year, according to AAA—and 90 percent of those people are traveling by car. While Northern Virginia is traffic-heavy throughout the holiday period, the day before Thanksgiving is the heaviest travel day. To help you plan your travel, the Virginia Department of Transportation created this set of maps showing Thanksgiving traffic congestion from Wednesday, Nov. 23 through Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011. Unlike last year, the Beltway Express Lanes will be open for Thanksgiving, which may alleviate some of the Thanksgiving travel congestion on Wednesday. If you're traveling Labor Day Weekend or driving to college, here's what AAA says about gas prices.
Average gas prices are climbing and economic growth is slow, but Americans are still making it a priority to travel for the Labor Day weekend. The average fuel price in Fairfax County on Sunday was $3.80 — more than 20-cents higher than just a month ago and slightly higher than Friday's national average of $3.75. AAA defines the Labor Day holiday weekend as starting on Thursday and ending Monday, Sept. 3. AAA projects 33 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend. State will see about 1.3 million on the roads from Wednesday to Sunday.
If you're traveling over the river and through the woods to Grandma's house for Thanksgiving this year, you won't be the only one on the road. In fact, according to AAA, you'll see 1.2 million Virginians traveling on the road for the holidays, an increase of 3.8 percent from last year. If you're trying to figure out the best time to leave or return home, you can check with the Virginia Department of Transportation, which has a forecast for different time periods for each day of the holiday based on previous Thanksgiving holiday road trends.
