Head of state party to step aside in December after successful 2012 election
Brian Moran, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia says he will step down from his post in early December. Moran's resignation becomes official at the party's next meeting Dec. 8. Moran, brother of longtime Rep. Jim Moran (D-8th District), has been chairman for two years. House Minority Whip Charniele Herring (D-Alexandria) said she will seek the chairmanship, according to The Washington Post. Herring was elected to the General Assembly in January 2009. If elected chairwoman, she would not have to vacate her House seat. Moran, 53, spent eight years as the Democratic Caucus chair in the House of Delegates before running for Governor, but losing in the Democratic primary, in 2009. MCLEAN — The potential $500 billion in defense cuts looming in Washington took center stage Thursday at the Capital One Conference Center during the first of three debates between U.S. Senate candidates Tim Kaine and George Allen. The cuts — $1 trillion in total under the banner of "sequestration" — could cost the Old Dominion thousands of jobs, particularly in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. Once meant as a stopgap measure, the continuing partisan divide in Washington has transformed them into a real threat. State party convention drew more than 2,000 to the city of Fairfax this weekend.
FAIRFAX — Perhaps U.S. Sen. Mark Warner put it best: "In 2008, we changed the guard. In 2012, we need to guard the change." More than 2,000 Democrats from across the commonwealth descended on George Mason University this weekend for the Democratic Party of Virginia's State Convention. The gathering served as part pep rally, part organizational meeting as activists mobilize for November.
