Dominion Power Prepares for Winter Storm Outages

Crew and trucks are ready to respond to calls throughout the storm heading toward the Northern Virginia area.

Dominion Virginia Power is expecting power outages considering the nature of the incoming storm. They've prepared their trucks and crews to service problem areas, said Le-Ha Anderson, manager for media and community relations, in a recent email to Patch. The Winter Storm Watch from the National Weather Service predicts "more than 5 inches possible with the potential for more than a foot somewhere within the watch area." Wet, heavy snow can weigh down tree limbs which can possibly make contact with power lines and cause power outages, Anderson explained. Dominion customers are encouraged to contact Dominion immediately at 1-866-DOM-HELP if they witness trees on power lines or leaning toward power lines. Anderson said it's best to stay away …

Dominion Power Scam Hits Vienna

Company has been warning customers across the state about telephone hoax in which a caller demands immediate payment to avoid electric shutoff.

A phone scam in which a caller demands immediate payment of a Dominion Power bill appears to have made its way to Vienna, a hoax about which the company has issued a statewide warning in an effort to protect its customers. Vienna Police say at 11:49 a.m. Jan. 11, a woman reported receiving a phone call from someone who claimed to be representing the power company. The caller "stated he was going to shut off her electricity unless she purchased a preloaded debit card from 7-11 and provided him with the reference numbers to redeem the card," a police report says. The department is investigating the case.  The incident matches others reported across the state this month. Dominion Power issued a warning to customers in early January, saying …

Dominion Virginia Power Warns of Phone Scam

Callers are demanding immediate payment, usually by prepaid debit card.

Dominion Virginia Power is warning customers of a scam in which a person on the phone claims to be a company employee and demands immediate payment of a bill.  The caller tells customers their electric service will be cut off if the bill isn't paid within a few hours and usually requests payment by prepaid debit card. The caller might falsely claim there's a problem with the customer's electric meter, which could lead to a fire if it isn't replaced immediately. They say Dominion will reimburse them later if they pay for it right away. Dominion says while they do call customers who have delinquent bills to remind them their payment is due, they never ask for specific payment information. Instead they direct customers on how they can make …

Photos: Tree on Center Street Damages Car, Power Lines

Dominion Power crews dispatched to make repairs

Nobody was injured Tuesday morning when a large tree cracked at its base and fell across power lines on Center Street, taking down a utility pole and leaving wires exposed on the sidewalk. The road is closed between Church Street and Ayr Hill Avenue NW until Dominion Power can make repairs to the lines. Dominion spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson said at 11:52 a.m. crews had been dispatched to the area. The tree landed on a minivan parked on the East side of Center Street, next to the office of Dr. Ashkan Ghaffari. An employee of Ghaffari Orthodontics said the vehicle belonged to another employee in the office. Nobody in the vehicle was injured, she said, and the office did not lose power as a result of the crash. Residents stopped to take …

Too many of the electric wires crossing roads in and around Vienna are too low. This isn't the first time that a moving truck has brought down power lines, and it may be Dominion's fault rather than the movers. Same thing has happened repeatedly on Polly Street SE in Vienna.   more ›

Dominion Customers May See Cheaper Bill This Fall

Monthly electric charges could drop to an average of $105 per household by September.

Gas prices may be going up and up, but cost of electricity, at least for Dominion customers, is dropping. The average household electricity bill is expected to drop to $105.90 in September, the company says, a 5.7 percent decrease from January 2012. The calculation is based on the an average use of 1,000 kilowatt-hours. The drop is owed largely to a decrease in Dominion's fuel rate. The proposed fuel rate is 2.706 cents per kilowatt-hour – a decrease of approximately 18 percent from the current fuel rate of 3.289 cents per kilowatt-hour, said Dominion spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson. The adjustment is the lowest the company has proposed since 2007, Anderson said. It will result in an annual fuel revenue reduction of $388 million. In a company …
