Basketball: South Lakes Girls Topple Madison

Rendle leads Seahawks for a 10-point victory.

South Lakes High School came back from a one-point halftime deficit Friday to defeat James Madison 55-45 in a league game that solidified the Seahawks place atop the Liberty District.  The team improves to 13-2 (6-1 Liberty) and first place in the conference. Madison is now 6-5 (4-2 Liberty). South Lakes outscored the Warhawks 30-19 in the second half to pull away with the win. The close score was a far cry from the teams' most recent memorable matchup in 2012, when Madison took the Liberty District title from South Lakes with a 78-47 win. The Seahawks, ranked No. 19 by the Washington Post, were led by junior center Abigail Rendle, who led all scorers with 16 points. She also added 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. …

Madison Girls Basketball Opens With Win

Tuesday victory over Chantilly Chargers kicks off the 2012 season

The Madison Warhawks opened the season on the road with a convincing victory against the Chantilly Chargers, 45-31.  With three new starters, including a freshman and sophomore, the Warhawks showed early season jitters as they trailed 11-8 after the first period.  But in second period Madison found its rhythm, using a trapping defense and clutch outside shooting to outscore Chantilly 12-3 and take a 20-14 lead at halftime. The Warhawks continued a hot shooting touch in the second half, hitting 3-pointers, mid-range jump shots and drives in the paint to open up a 19-point lead by the end of the third period.  The taller Chantilly squad was stymied by the Warhawks’ relentless pressure defense, which held the Chargers to 4 points in the …

Madison Falls in Regional Semifinals

Girls basketball can't keep up with late West Springfield run, looks to build on one of most successful seasons in 2013

Madison High School's girls basketball team most successful season under coach Kirsten Stone finally came to an end on Friday, as the young Warhawks faltered down the stretch in a 62-46 loss against West Springfield High School in the Northern Region semifinals. Megan LeDuc scored 17 points, Kelly Koshuta added 14 and Megan Henshaw finished with 11 for Madison, which reached its first regional semifinal since 2005. But Stone said it wasn't just the results on the court that made this season a great one.  "I love this team," said Stone, who was named the Northern Region's Coach of the Year. "Everything was a success. We got a step further this year, and every year we've got better and better. This is a good stepping stone for us. Now we …

Madison Girls Win Region Quarterfinals

64-53 victory over Robinson sends Warhawks to semifinals for first time in half a decade

Heading into the Northern Region quarterfinals Wednesday night, Coach Kirsten Roberts Stone's advice to her Madison High School girls basketball team was simple: "play strong, and play our game." The Warhawks did just that, stopping the Robinson Rams from ever getting the lead in a tightly matched, physical 64-53 win on Wednesday night that sends the team to the regional semifinals for the first time in half a decade. Before tip-off on Madison's home court, some classified the matchup as inexperience versus a well-traveled bench of veterans. The Warhawks, Liberty District champions, have just two seniors on their roster and only one among their starting five; the Rams have boasted a starting lineup of all seniors with another three on the …

Madison Beats Lake Braddock In First Round

Warhawks girls basketball will face Robinson in Northern Region quarterfinals

Madison High School's girls basketball team took off in the second half of their game against Lake Braddock on Monday night, outpacing the Bruins for a 55-36 victory in the first round of Northern Region play. After ending the first quarter down 15-5, Lake Braddock  found a groove, matching Madison's 14 points for the second quarter. They went into halftime down just 10 points, 29-19. But the second half was Madison's game. They kept Lake Braddock at a distance of 10 points or greater for the last two quarters to win 55-36 at the buzzer. Despite extra pressure, Madison freshman Kelly Koshuta still walked away with a team-high 17 points, five of them from the line. Juniors Megan LeDuc and Megan Henshaw netted 10 and 9 points a piece, with …

Madison Downs South Lakes for Liberty Title

Warhawks girls basketball earns fourth title in five years with 78-47 win.

If losing the first two games of the season is a distant memory to the Madison girls basketball team, falling in the Liberty District championship game last year must feel like a lifetime ago. Freshman sensation Kelly Koshuta scored a career high 32 points and the Warhawks routed South Lakes 78-47 Friday night to reestablish their supremacy in the district. Megan Henshaw added 19 points during a game that was just about out of reach by halftime. "It's definitely more fun to win, that's for sure," Madison head coach Kirsten Stone said, contrasting a 45-41 loss to Stone Bridge in the title game last season. "And a couple girls know both [winning and losing]." The Warhawks used a 10-0 run before halftime to extend their lead to 34-18, and …
