Teen Gives Back to Sandy Victims for the Holidays

Tyler McCormack is collecting toys in Vienna and Oakton for children impacted by Superstorm Sandy.

Vienna’s Tyler McCormack, 17, is like most other high school seniors: busy preparing for college. He is also busy working to give back during the holiday season. This year he is working to collect toys for children who were victims of Hurricane Sandy. As a freshman at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC, McCormack started the nonprofit Reach Out for Kids. His first project was a book drive for Fairfax’s FACETS. He’s also worked with a number of orphanages in Nassau to help bring them school supplies, backpacks, Christmas presents and more. This year, as a senior, McCormack said after seeing what the victims of Sandy were going through, he wanted to help make sure they could do something for the children who might be struggling …

Patch and AOL Send Hurricane Sandy Relief Trucks to Long Island, New Jersey

Employees help out, and you can, too.

It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Click here to donate: https://donate.networkforgood.org/aol "When a catastrophe of this size hits, we all feel it, both the hundreds of us who live in the impacted towns, and our colleagues who are watching and wishing they could help …

Superstorm Sandy Relief: How You Can Help

Here is how Northern Virginia residents' donations can aid victims in most affected areas.

Northern Virginia was largely spared from catastrophic damage from Superstorm Sandy, but residents in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other coastal areas were not so lucky. Patch has gathered some local resources if you want to help in relief efforts. Volunteers in New Jersey are being coordinated through an emergency response hotline, 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397). Alternate numbers, for when the hotline isn’t staffed, include 609-775-5236 and 908-303-0471 or emails can be sent to Rowena.Madden@sos.state.nj.us. The New York City agency NYC Service is coordinating volunteers for various relief projects in New York City. Go to its Facebook page  or email nycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov with your name and email address. The American Red …

I have two booklets from watch dog organizations which rate/evaluate non-profit organizations, in terms of their fundraising practices, use of funds, complaint history, etc. One is the “Wise Giving Guide” by the Better Business Bureau, and another is the “Charity Rating Guide” by the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP). As far as the financials of the Red Cross and the Salvation Army go, the…   more ›

Sandy Pours Cold Water on Campaigns

Presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, Senate candidates Tim Kaine, George Allen canceled Virginia campaign events during Hurricane Sandy. Hours extended for absentee voting.

Hurricane Sandy upended the campaign schedules for the presidential race, Virginia's U.S. Senate race and congressional races, and put a temporary halt to some early voting and election officer training in the runup to Election Day next week. "I don't want anything to interrupt full participation in democracy as we head into this presidential election," said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, in a news conference with reporters Tuesday.   Eight registrars across the state Tuesday were closed — including Arlington County, Falls Church City, Loudoun County and Manassas Park City — due to the storm and could not offer absentee voting. Fairfax County offered absentee voting at Government Center from 4 to 8 p.m. In Alexandria, at least one voting …

Hurricane Sandy: Update for the Afternoon Commute

Some Vienna roads still obstructed by felled trees, downed power lines

For those readying for their commute home to Vienna, a few detours might still be in order two days after Hurricane Sandy left the area. The following Vienna roads remain closed as of 3 p.m.:  Click here for a map of road closures in Fairfax County. Are you noticing road closures not listed? Frankenstorm

We've seen things that no one should ever have to witness

In the past few years, we have weathered (heh) Snowmageddon, a derecho, an earthquake and freak flooding in this area.  And then along comes Hurricane Sandy, also known as "Frankenstorm." This name, for the record, is completely unacceptable. Not only because of the ridiculous name, but also because this is horrific news for someone like me who is terrible in crisis situations. But with all of the hype surrounding this event and because I grew up in a coastal town and have learned to respect and prepare for tropical storms,  I actually did plan for the worst-case scenario. That is why, on Friday afternoon, I got my hair highlighted and bought some clothes at Goodwill to complete my husband’s buccaneer costume for a party we were attending …

Hurricane Sandy: Most of Vienna Powered Up

Small clusters still without power as of 1 a.m. Wednesday

While much of the East Coast — including parts of Northern Virginia — saw the worst of Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath, Vienna residents saw a quick recovery from more than 6,000 power outages and the few road closings it experienced. Small clusters of residents in Vienna are still without power as of 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to an interactive outage map from Dominion Virginia Power. About 145 customers around the Courthouse Road area, on the Oakton-Vienna border, have no power. Residents in the area told Patch crews from Dominion were working on the outage late Tuesday evening.  In Fairfax County, Dominion is reporting 13,736 outages as of 1 a.m. To see the interactive outage map, click here. Vienna's roads have seen most closures …

Hurricane Sandy: Your Shout-Outs

Who paid you or your neighbors a kindness? Give them a shout-out.

Though spared the worst of Hurricane Sandy, Vienna had its share of outages, downed trees and flooding.  We know many people worked hard to get things back on track for Vienna residents, and we want to hear about them. So, give those Good Samaritans and hard workers a well-deserved shout-out in the comments section below. Who went above and beyond the call of duty? Who helped make the storm easier for you?  Related Content: Get daily and breaking news email updates from Vienna Patch by signing up for newsletters here. Or follow Vienna Patch on Twitter and Facebook.

Hunter Mill Road is closed. Again. And this time it seemed that people were going to have to drive around given the dire warnings on tv and radio. Not to mention the blue ribbons still flying to honor a lost life reminding us how fragile life can be and how unbelievably strong the forces of water can be. Not so some people. When caught in the act of trying to move the barricades from a still-…   more ›

FCPS Schools Will Open as Usual Wednesday

School is in and Halloween is on in Fairfax County.

All Fairfax County public schools and offices will open on time on Wednesday, Oct. 31, the schools system announced Tuesday. Individual schools that may have power outages will be reassessed in the morning, so check your inbox for Keep in Touch messages from your individual schools or check the FCPS website. FCPS is asking parents to be patient as buses may need to work around road closures in some parts of the county and bus routes may be delayed. Meanwhile, Halloween trick or treating is generally on in most neighborhoods in Fairfax County. Since trick or treat is not organized by any one jurisdiction, like a town government it is hard to make a universal decision, said Fairfax County spokeswoman Merni Fitzgerald. For more information, …
