Dear Editor, It’s January and with January brings the most common concern of high school seniors, that’s college acceptance! Are you in? Are you out? Where are you going? How will we pay? This is all high school seniors are thinking about right now, as I was right there with them last year applying to Virginia colleges. With many of my high school classmates having their eyes set on William & Mary as their first choice, I did a little research and found out how fortunate I was to have gotten into William & Mary. William & Mary provides 32 percent of our college spots to out of state students. That makes it very difficult for many of our best and brightest Virginia students, including my classmates, to get in. That is why I was pleased to…

Editor's Note: The following was submitted as a Letter to the Editor from Terry Wear, chairman of the 11th Congressional District Republican Committee. It is unedited. Dear Editor, There have been numerous opportunities for Gerry Connolly to stop or slow the impending sequestration cuts that will result in tens of thousands of layoffs in Northern Virginia and the 11th District. After voting for both versions of the Budget Control Act of 2011, which authorized this sequestration process; Connolly voted against several measures that would lessen the impact of the cuts, including an amendment authored by fellow Virginia Congressman Scott Rigell. These sequestration cuts disproportionately burden Northern Virginia and the defense industry …

Vienna resident Andrew Kerr writes in opposition to the proposed Church Street parking garage

I write in profound opposition to the proposed parking garage in Vienna —something we're being asked to pay for. First, having lived here for several years and had extensive talks about living in Vienna with lots of neighbors, we all agree that Vienna is a great place to live but needs a few things. I've heard neighbors long for an Irish pub, a gourmet burger restaurant, more sidewalks, a public pool, and a re-invigorated community center. No one, ever, has longed for a parking garage. For three million dollars, Vienna could indeed make a really nice community center, build more sidewalks, build a pool, or offer targeted incentives for fun local restaurants to add to Church and Maple streets. Second, there's no demonstrated need. Spending …

There are two things that can be done to avoid the problems ahead for commuters and residents around Route 7 between Sterling and Tysons Corner. The first solution: Virginia must retake the Dulles Toll Road (DTR). Secretary Sean Connaughton on April 14, 2012 said the state was so unhappy with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority that it would rather finish building the Silver Line itself. “We are actively evaluating whether we can take the project over. These guys [MWAA] are a disaster,” Connaughton said. “We’re at the point, quite honestly, where we think we could potentially do it better, cheaper, faster.” The Virginia Department of Transportation controls the Operating Permit for the DTR and could revoke that permit based on a…

I sure wish this comment thread had as much participation as say, for example, the one about homeschoolers participating in public school sports. This issue is way more important to Virginia citizens overall and has been an utter travesty for far too long. I suspect that students from Northern Virginia are shut out of state schools in larger numbers than students from other areas. I don't have …   more ›
