You know the defining moments in a lifetime that people remember with absolute clarity? Things like man walking on the moon, the Buggles video playing on MTV, the first time you used the word “Google” as a verb, and when you learned while emphatically making a point during a huge meeting at your first real job it is intents and purposes and not intensive purposes? Well, another of these moments happened recently with the announcement that Twinkies and Ho Hos were no longer going to be manufactured by Hostess. With that news, I immediately experienced a wave of nostalgia as these were a part of my childhood. Share Your MTV Memories On Its 30th Birthday

MTV launched at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 1, 1981

When MTV launched 30 years ago today, it aired — you'll never believe this — a music video. Yes, long before Jersey Shore and 16 and Pregnant dominated the channel's airwaves, MTV took its place in television history with the video for the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star." It quickly became a must for artists to develop videos for their singles to gain exposure. And some — namely Madonna and Michael Jackson — used the medium to launch themselves to superstardom status. It would be easy to use this 30th anniversary as a way to begrudge the way the channel is being used today, as only the channel's offspring show actual music videos on a somewhat regular basis. Oh my...thirty years ago. My friends and I became glued the t.v. waiting for the top of the hour when 'the astronaut' would announce what videos were coming up that hour. If The Police or The Go Go's were mentioned, I didn't move.   more ›
