Football: Warhawks' Season Comes to an End

Madison suffers first-round playoffs loss to South County

Madison's season ended in a stinging 19-14 defeat at the hands of the South County Stallions in the first round of the playoffs Friday night at Madison High School.  The loss ended a successful season for the Warhawks that saw the team post an 8-3 record under second-year Head Coach Lenny Schultz.   Defense was the name of the game early with both teams struggling to establish their offenses. The Stallions kicked a 33-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead and seemed in control after an 82-yard touchdown pass for a 9-0 lead midway through the second quarter. However, the Warhawks offense came alive mixing runs and passes to score two second-quarter touchdowns and take a 14-9 lead into the half.   As the second half began, South County grabbed the …

The Warhawks are awaiting final word on their first playoff game, but it appears they will play South County at home Friday night. Madison added two more scores on a short run by Jacob Hall and a 16-yard Mitch Goddard-to-Ben Sanford touchdown pass to take a 21-0 lead after one quarter.   The Statesmen scored their first touchdown when all-district running back, Kekoa Yamaguch, ran up the …

The Bulldogs, who rolled to a 42-0 victory, remained undefeated and showed why they are one of the best teams in the metropolitan area. The loss dropped Madison's overall record to 7-2 and its District record to 5-1.  Stone Bridge took the opening kickoff and capped a 10-play drive with a 25-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead. Madison's offense tried without success to establish the run against the big and fast Bulldog defense and had to punt early and often. The Warhawk defense started strong and twice stopped the powerful Bulldog running game on fourth and short. The first quarter ended with Madison down, 7-0.  …

Football: Warhawks Win Homecoming Battle

Madison High earns late victory over Thomas Jefferson

After Thomas Jefferson High School kept them scoreless in the first half, the Madison High Warhawks found their footing to win this year's Homecoming game 17-3 on Friday night. After a first quarter that left both teams scoreless, the Warhawks found themselves at a 3-0 disadvantage when the Colonials kicked a 7-yard field goal with a little more than two minutes left in the half. The Colonials drive to put them in a good field goal position came after the Warhawks squandered their possession on penalties that put them as many as 40 yards back from a first down.  The Warhawks had a season-high 15 penalties for 135 yards in Friday's game. "We came out kinda flat. We weren't really running on all cylinders," Warhawks quarterback Dan Powers …

The win kept Madison unbeaten in District play and raised their overall record to 4-1. With the loss, Langley dropped to 1-1 in the District and 3-2 overall. Langley's offense seemed in control as they took the opening kickoff, marched down the field in four plays and scored on an 11-yard run to take an early 7-0 lead. After a quick three and out, Madison punted the ball to Langley, who again moved the ball drive deep into Warhawk territory. However, as they have done all year, the Warhawk defense — who have christened themselves the Dark Side — stood firm and stopped the Saxons on fourth down. Warhawk …

Football: Warhawks Open District Play with Win

Madison defeats McLean 29-6

In its first Liberty District game, the Madison Warhawks rolled to a convincing 29-6 win over the McLean Highlanders. With the win, Madison improved its overall record to 3-1 while McLean dropped to 2-2.  The Warhawks got off to a quick start with an explosive 78-yard touchdown pass from Dan Powers to Ben Stanford on the third play of the game. Thinking big play, Powers spotted Sanford streaking up the left sideline. The two had almost connected on the same play to open the game, but this time their timing was perfect. Sanford gathered in the 35-yard pass, shook his defender and raced into the end zone as the Warhawk fans roared their approval.  Nick Hoy led the swarming Warhawk defense that forced McLean into a three-and-out on its first …
