Silver Line Bus Routes Take Shape

Future of Route 432 through Vienna is unclear. What do you think should happen with the route?

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation is zeroing in on a plan for enhanced bus service to help residents get to new Metro stations when the Silver Line opens at the end of 2013. More than 40 percent of the Fairfax Connector system will change in some way when those stations open, and officials are seeking feedback from residents to provide the best service possible. Wednesday night’s meeting in Tysons marked the end of the second round of public input sessions on the routes. FCDOT representatives conducted the first round in February, when many residents wanted to see changes to route layouts and bus frequency. The revised plan features more midday and evening bus service on Reston and Herndon routes. Officials also restored the …

The 3rd set of facts isn't actually factual else why would any of us want to see our tax dollars poured into a dangerous public good like that? And I gather the other modes suggested are basically cars or SUVS or minivans - which is the very essence of our problem no? There is no street car, the metro is the destination, bikes are only used by scofflaws and walking only works with 0.25-0.4 miles…   more ›

Surveillance Cameras Coming to Your Metro Car

Metro will triple the number of surveillance cameras in rail cars as part of a new security system.

Metro plans to triple the number of surveillance cameras throughout the Metrorail system—increasing the number of cameras to about 6,000—and will install them inside Metro rail cars for the first time ever, according to the Associated Press. The Vienna Metro station was recently ranked No. 3 on a top 10 list of stations with the most crime in Virginia by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. The expansion could cost an estimated $6.5 million, only some of which would come from federal grants, according to The Washington Examiner. "We have no greater responsibility than protecting the safety of our customers, visitors and employees," Metro spokesman Philip Stewart told The Washington Examiner. "To that end, we are in the …

Metro Cell Phone Service Deadline Pushed Back

Metro says system-wide capability not possible until 2015, but the Congressional deadline is Sept. 30 of this year.

Metro got a break this week on its Congressional deadline to install cellphone service system-wide; a continuing resolution pushed the due date from March 30 to Sept. 30, The Washington Examiner reports. But don't get your hopes up, Metro has said system-wide service will not happen until December 2015. Among other requirements to continue receiving $150 million in federal funding each year, Metro is supposed to offer cell phone service throughout the transit system. Metro's 20 busiest stations were wired for internet service in 2009, but many tunnels between stations and many stations still do not have cell phone or internet service capabilities. Currently AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless have mixed levels of service throughout…

Some work will be done late Sunday evenings. Click on your nearest station on the map to see when the next train arrives and to learn about any alerts.

Don't tell Metro, but they FORGOT to schedule weekend track work. Well, that's not entirely accurate. Now through April 14, Metro is halting weekend track work activities during the Cherry Blossom Festival, with the exception of late Sunday evenings. "While the work we do almost every weekend is necessary to get the system back to a steady state of safety and reliability, we are in a position where we can take a short break to let everyone enjoy the season," Metro General Manager and CEO Richard Sarles said in a press release. "The spring break will give people an opportunity to experience the type of system we are working toward." Of course, there is always the possibility of unscheduled track work should something break during normal …
