Mosaic District In, Plush Gelato Out: Vienna's Month in Food

A roundup of the top food headlines this month in Vienna.

February was a newsy month in the Vienna food scene. Residents, still reeling from the January loss of Magruder's, also saw Plush Gelato shut its doors. The shop, which said on its Facebook page the rent was too high to stay in business, will apparently be selling its treats at local Smart Markets. Readers spoke out about the empty space, saying it was an eyesore and lacked adequate parking. Some questioned whether any business, food-based or not, can survive at all.  On the other side of town, just beyond town borders, several businesses set up shop in the ever-growing Mosiac District. One of Vienna's own chefs also got an unusual accolade, and some restaurants are worried about the impacts of sequestration.  Stay tuned in March for news …

Cava Mezze Grill Now Open in Mosaic District

Store offers Greek-inspired dishes with a new age twist.

Cava Mezze Grill opened its Mosaic District location (2905 District Ave.) Wednesday. Co-owner Brett Schulman said he and his business partners liked the explosion of local restaurants that are coming to the Mosaic District — a new shopping and entertainment center off Gallows Road near Merrifield— and they wanted to be a part of it. After founding the full-service Cava restaurant in Rockville, Md. in 2006, Schulman said the group decided to diversify the business and sell their dips and spreads in grocery stores and open smaller, fast service restaurants. “The grill idea was to take some of what we do in the restaurant and what we sell in the stores and put them into a fast paced grill,” Schulman said. “You can get a restaurant quality …

Taylor Gourmet Deli Open in Merrifield

New sandwich shop in the Mosaic District brings the best from Philadelphia to Northern Virginia.

When Casey Patten moved to Washington, DC about 11 years ago after graduating from Penn State University, he couldn’t find a good Philadelphia hoagie in the area. So four years ago, he started Taylor Gourmet Deli and on Saturday, he and his business partners opened their newest location in the Mosaic District in Merrifield. The Mosaic District is a new shopping area off of Gallows Road near the Dunn Loring Metro in Vienna, with a movie theatre, Target and other shops. The deli offers breakfast lunch and dinner. In addition to the classic cheese steak, the deli offers up some of Philadelphia’s other famed sandwiches. “I couldn’t get a good hoagie,” Patten said. “When I would go into a sandwich shop and ask for a hoagie, people would look at…
