Metro will perform system rebuilding work on all but one line in the system for the weekend of May 17-19. This weekend's rebuilding work will result in service changes on the Red, Orange and Green lines. Blue or Yellow lines riders can breathe easy, there is no scheduled track work on either line this weekend. Metro will perform system rebuilding work on every line in the system for the weekend of April 26-28. On Sunday, the system will open early to accommodate runners in the Nike Women's Half Marathon. Sunday, Metro will open at 5 a.m. for the Nike Women's Half Marathon and runners can access the start line from Metro Center (Red/Blue/Orange lines), Federal Triangle (Blue/Orange lines) or Archives (Yellow/Green lines). Taking the Metro to get around this weekend? If you're trying to take the rail from Vienna, it's going to be more difficult than usual. Metro is planning to shut down four Orange Line stations — Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church and East Falls Church — as it integrates signals with the upcoming Silver Line. If you thought the Silver Line would continue to be the focus of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) for the foreseeable future, think again. Metro has a proposed a series of improvements to help the system keep up with demand on other lines. For the past year and a half, the agency has been working to unveil "Momentum," a $26 billion spending plan that focuses on, among other things, creating new connections and bypassing others that are holding riders up. Inauguration Day 2009 set the all time ridership record for Metro at about 1.54 million trips on rail and bus combined. The rail ridership in 2009 alone was 1.12 million trips. Metro is preparing for a crowded system this year as well, spokesman Dan Stessel told Patch. WMATA estimates 600,000 to 800,000 people will use Metrorail for the 2013 inauguration events. Metro has been working with external partners like the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police and other agencies involved in inauguration activities to help alleviate some of the crowding that plagued metro during the 2009 inauguration. Taking the Metro to get around this weekend? Orange Line customers are in luck this weekend: There are no planned projects for Dec. 22 or Dec. 23 -- the best kind of holiday gift. According to a Metro news release: The only planned work will take place on the Green Line, and will only affect customers traveling to or from Greenbelt Station. I rode the Metro on Saturday from Union Station to Vienna. This is a distance of about 18 miles. The trip took 2 hours. This is not an isolated incident, but a regular occrence. These people do not know how to run a railroad. They perform like they have never run a railroad.
