Dominion Power restores power to more than 100,000 in 24 hours after strong storm hits Saturday.
Update Sunday 5:30 p.m.: Things are starting to get back to normal for those who lost power over the weekend, just in time for getting back to work and school on Monday. Dominion Power has restored power to more than 100,000 homes in 24 hours time in Northern Virginia. As of about 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, Dominion Power reported 2,114 still without power in Northern Virginia. Power outages on Thursday, Friday morning caused by underground equipment failure
Two separate power outages in Tysons Corner darkened local businesses on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, Dominion Power Virginia confirms. The power outage at Tysons Galleria on Thursday afternoon affected 33 customers, mainly restaurants. "We found underground equipment that had failed," Dominion spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson said. "Restoration was delayed slightly because we could not access the equipment due to a fence that had been build around it. By midnight, we were able to restore power to all customers." In a separate incident at 8 a.m. Friday, a power outage on Leesburg Pike affected customers in the Westwood building. Post-Derecho the telecommunications company is continuing to restore service to all customers in Northern Virginia.
A possible tornado in Fredericksburg, a derecho and other severe weather have thrown service out of commission for many Verizon customers. Since June 29, Verizon has been experiencing service outages due to the freak weather occurances and has been assessing and repairing damage. "After Verizon technicians worked extended shifts throughout the weekend, the company’s service levels are nearly back to normal in most of the Washington metropolitan area," said a prepared statement from the company. About 3,400 customers lose power after Vale Road incident.
Update, 2:34 p.m.: Fairfax County sent out an alert that Vale Road will be closed at Oak Valley Drive in Vienna for about eight hours. -- Update, 1:34 p.m.: The truck did not crash into the pole, but because of its height, it clipped the wires. The truck was traveling eastbound on Vale Road. If traveling westbound, drivers will be detoured onto Rocky Branch Road. Dominion Power sends extra crews to deal with weather-related outages in Northern Virginia; no estimated restoration time
Update 9:13 a.m. Sunday: About 144 customers are still without power. Dominion's estimate is by 1 p.m. Update 12:24 a.m. Sunday: All but about 200 customers have power restored from Saturday night's outage. Dominion Power says it expects gusts to continue through tomorrow. They're preparing for the weather and will have extra crews on hand, they said. Update 11:06 p.m.: Some residents on Cottage Street are reporting their power has returned. Update 8:59 p.m.: All of Ross Drive down to George St, and Yeonas to Ross, is still blocked. Original: A tree fell across Cottage Street between Walker Street and Ross Drive on Sunday night, taking down power lines and leaving more than 500 residents without electricity.
