Marshall falls to Langley in semifinals.
Madison High School's baseball team continued to roll Friday night as it shut out Stone Bridge High 11-0 in the Liberty District semifinals. The win (20-1) sets the Warhawks up for an appearance in the Liberty District championship game next week. Dan Powers pitched a 1-hitter to seal the victory, according to the Washington Post. Luke Belt ripped a home run. Madison will face the Langley Saxons (14-7) at 7 p.m. Monday at Madison for the championship. Madison has won seven district championships in the past 11 years. Langley beat Marshall to move on to the title game, killing the idea of a cross-town rivalry championship. The Saxons beat the Statesmen 8-7 on Friday night.

Warhawks prevails in early season match between crosstown rivals — both top teams in Virginia's Liberty District.
The defending Liberty District Champion Madison High School girls lacrosse team (4-1) entered district play Friday night with a resounding 24-10 victory over cross-town rival Marshall High School (4-3-2). Madison came out strong, with Katie Kerrigan, Kierra Sweeney (2), Melissa Kellan and Erin Callahan scoring five unanswered goals in the first few minutes of the game. After an early time out, the Statesmen, led by Coach Nicholle Depaz Clinton, regrouped and roared back to take a 9-8 halftime lead. A pep talk from Head Coach Amanda Counts at the break instilled a sense of urgency in the Warhawks, as they dominated draw control and scored 16 goals in the second half. The Warhawks were lead by senior Melissa Kellan with 7 goals and 2 assists…

Kaitlin Graf was a cheerleader at Penn State.
Kaitlin Graf has been cheering since she was 5 years old. So when she saw the opening for a cheer coach at George Marshall High School, she acted quickly to take the opportunity. Graf, 23, was named the new head cheer coach at Marshall this month. The former captain of the Penn State University Mont Alto cheer squad said she will meet with the athletic director at the high school this week and hopes to hold an interest meeting sometime soon. “I’m looking forward to helping build this program,” said Graf, a fourth grade teacher at Westlawn Elementary School in Falls Church. "I was so excited when I heard I got the job." Marshall’s previous cheer coach, who had been at the helm for the last eight years, recently moved out of state. And Joe …

Chantilly High knocks Marshall out of playoffs in a 66-45 win.
Marshall High School’s playoff run has come to an end. The Statesmen lost 66-45 Monday to Chantilly High in the first round of the AAA Northern Region Tournament. The Statesmen were down 34-19 at the half and when they returned to the court for the second half, they didn’t warm up. Instead, Head Coach Dan Hale said he told his team in the locker room you can only win games you’re down in two points at a time. Senior Douglas Turpin heard Hale loud and clear and scored the first points of the second half on drive into the paint. Marshall outscored Chantilly 18-5 in the third quarter and pulled within two points of the Chargers. Hale said he was proud of his team for fighting and making it a 39-37 second half. “I was proud of my boys for …

After winning Liberty District titles Friday, Vienna teams start journey Monday in the AAA Northern Region tournament.
While some will take Monday off for Presidents' Day, members of two Vienna basketball teams will be taking the court in the first round of the Northern Region playoffs. The Madison High School girls basketball team and Marshall High School boys basketball are coming into Monday's games with some significant momentum: both won the Liberty District championship game on Friday. For the Warhawks, Friday marked the fifth such title in six years — this season, they battled for the crown without starters Megan Henshaw and Kelly Koshuta, both of whom are battling ACL injuries. And for the Statesmen, the victory — in which Marshall easily outpaced McLean 60-45 — was their first Liberty District crown in the program's history. On Monday, the …

The senior duo of Connor Barrand and Grant Leibow combined to score 34 points against Fairfax on Wednesday enroute to a 63-55 overtime victory — earning them a spot in Friday's Liberty District Championship Game against McLean. The Marshall Statesmen will attempt Friday to win their first ever Liberty District Championship. Marshall (16-7, 11-5 Liberty District) trailed from early in the second quarter until the final minutes of regulation. But Fairfax’s (11-13, 9-7 Liberty District) quest to return back to the district final for the second year in a row fell short. Barrand’s put-back basket with under a minute left in regulation tied the game at 51 all. Senior forward Doug Turpin came up with a crucial block right before the buzzer to …

The Marshall High School boys basketball team finished the Joe Cascio Classic Varsity Holiday Basketball Tournament at 1-2 over three games held Dec. 27 to 29. In game one, the Marshall boys basketball team suffered from a slow start and a tough draw to lose their opening game against a good J.E.B. Stuart Raiders team. The Statesmen were unable to dig themselves out of a deep hole and came up just short against a Raiders team seeking revenge for a loss to the Statesmen earlier in the season. Stuart came ready to play and opened up a 17 point half time lead. The Statesmen found themselves trailing by 12 at the end of the third period before finally kicking it into a higher gear in the final six minutes of play. Marshall poured in 27 points …

The Madison High School softball team (8-3) returned from spring break Tuesday to knock out a 5-4 victory over Langley High School in an important Liberty District matchup. It was clear from the outset the Warhawk players spent some time away from the softball field, as they dug themselves an early hole, trailing 4 to 1 after three innings of play. The defense committed three errors and gave up two unearned runs before settling down to secure a victory in the 9th inning using the International Tie Breaker procedure. Madison's Kelsey Ross started on the mound and went five innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs while striking out three. She also intentionally walked a Saxon batter. Elizabeth Fallas came on to pitch the final …
