Campaign advisors talk candidly at VPAP forum at George Mason's Arlington campus.
Remember all those horrible television ads in the Tim Kaine-George Allen race for the U.S. Senate? It turns out not everyone with those campaigns liked them, either. Mo Elleithee, a senior strategist for the Kaine campaign, and Boyd Marcus, a senior political advisor for Allen's Senate bid, agreed Thursday that many of those ads were "total crap." Elleithee said the negative ads paid for by outside groups actually helped Kaine. The two spoke candidly for more than an hour at a Virginia Public Access Project forum at George Mason University's Arlington campus. George Mason political scientist Mark Rozell moderated. The pair — Elleithee is a longtime Democrat, and served as senior spokesman for Hillary Clinton's presidential bid in 2008; …

New Virginia senator says first order of business is to work on good solutions to nation's debt.
Tim Kaine (D), Virginia's newly-elected U.S. Senator, says his first order of business will be to lobby for longterm solutions for the country's fiscal situation. Kaine held a press conference in Richmond on Wednesday, one day after he defeated former Virginia governor and senator George Allen (R) in the general election. Kaine, governor of the state from 2006-10, earned 52 percent of the vote to Allen's 48 on Tuesday. Kaine takes over the seat vacated by Sen. Jim Webb (D), who is retiring after one term. Webb defeated Allen in a similarly close Senate race in 2006. “The key for us in public office is to read the message from the electorate," Kaine told reporters. "They want cooperative government. They are telling us over and over and …

Wife of Tim Kaine stumps for her husband, kicks off canvassing
Anne Holton dropped by the home of a Vienna resident to rev up volunteers and kick off a canvassing campaign for her husband's U.S. Senate run. Holton's stop at the home of Bettina Lawton on Riviera Drive started a day of campaigning in Northern Virginia, during which she visited the Annandale Fall Festival and a campaign office in Alexandria. "It is wonderful to see so many of you out here ready to knock on doors and talk to voters in your community about what is at stake in this race," said Holton, the wife of U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine (D). "We need more leaders like Tim in the Senate who know how to put partisanship aside and work together to break through the Washington gridlock to create more economic opportunities for all …

Anne Holton, wife of U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine, visits Oakton campaign office Saturday.
Anne Holton visited with Democratic volunteers at her husband's Oakton campaign office Saturday, encouraging them to keep up their hard work canvassing nearby neighborhoods and calling registered voters. Holton, wife of U.S. Senate hopeful and former Gov. Tim Kaine (D), stopped in Oakton for the first time in this campaign about a month after Kaine himself visited the volunteers at the same office in Hunter Mill Plaza. She applauded the volunteers' efforts, saying their work at the grassroots level is the answer to the other side's Super PACs. "Wouldn't it be fun to show those folks who think that if you just write more zeroes on their checks they can determine what happens on Election Day ... that they're wrong?" Holton said. "The best …

U.S. Senate candidate responds to 10 questions posed by Patch readers in Northern Virginia.
A few weeks ago, we asked Patch readers in Northern Virginia to throw out some questions for George Allen and Tim Kaine, both vying for the U.S. Senate seat in Virginia. So you asked and the candidates answered. Read George Allen's responses here. Tim Kaine's answers, published below, are unedited. 1. There is considerable reporting in the popular media that Social Security and Medicare are in financial ruin and in need of a fix, but every time one person dares to speak-up and suggest constructive measures to save the system, the other candidate attacks that person for being insensitive to the needs of seniors and claims the proponent of modifications wants to dismantle the programs. How would you address these issues knowing full well …
