Town Leaf Collection Begins Today

Residents should rake leaves to curb for collection

Town of Vienna residents will see public works crews collecting leaves today, the first of three collections to take place through December. Crews will start in north Vienna and work their way south to collect leaves residents have raked to their curbs.  This year, the town will have a flexible schedule for the collections to increase efficiency and account for weather-related issues. "Leaf piles should be free of limbs, sticks, acorns or other debris which may clog the vacuum hose," according to a news release from the town. Over the next few months, signs with the next projected date for leaf collection will be placed at the entrances of neighborhoods. Residents may also bag leaves for collection on your regular weekly collection  day. …

Streets to Close for Slurry Seal Repair Work

From Tuesday through Friday, crews will repair deteriorated streets in Vienna

Beginning Tuesday, the Town of Vienna's Department of Public Works will begin slurry seal repairs on various streets in town.  Crews will begin work on Paris Court first, then move to Ceret Court, the 600 and 700 blocks of Hillcrest Drive,  Oak Vale Court, Westview Court and Upham Place throughout the rest of the week.  Weather permitting, work will begin Tuesday and end Friday. Vehicles cannot drive on the surface for at least three hours after the slurry seal has been applied. Slurry seal is a "water-based, emulsified asphalt and stone dust mixture" spread over the street surface to repair deterioration, such as cracking, potholes, divots or ruts, according to the town website. The seal protects the street from water penetration and …

Vienna, NOVA Honor Colorado Victims

Flags will be flying at half staff through Wednesday to honor those who were lost.

Flags in Vienna, Northern Virginia and the rest of the country will be flying at half-staff through Wednesday to honor the victims of the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo. The lowering applies to the flags of the United States, individual states, and county and city governments. Most noticeable have been the flags along the Vienna Town Green, which continued to fly at half staff Tuesday night. At the midnight showing of the latest installment of Batman at a Colorado theater on Friday, a 24-year-old man attacked a packed movie theater, killing several people and wounding dozens more. The suspect in the shootings headed to court on Monday and faces several charges of first-degree murder. This article has been updated.

"killing several people and wounding dozens more." Wow, I know it's just a Patch article, but seriously? That statement is downplaying it a tad. 12 people were killed, 59 were wounded.   more ›

"Ask the Town" is a weekly series that features Vienna Public Information Officer Kirstyn Barr answering reader questions about anything and everything Vienna. Have a question? Leave it in the comments below; we'll answer it next week.
