Unified Prevention Coalition, Fairfax County police put on annual program for college-bound students and their families.
As this year's Fairfax County high school seniors start to receive acceptance letters and prepare for life away from home, the Unified Prevention Coalition of Fairfax County is once again trying to make the risks of underage drinking a part of college-bound conversations. The organization's annual "Perils of the College Drinking Culture” Forum — a panel discussion on underage and binge drinking designed for students and their parents — kicks off Thursday in McLean, with three other dates set later this spring at locations across the region. Today we get to welcome another new blogger to the Vienna Patch family: The Unified Prevention Coalition. UPC is a nonprofit comprised of more than 50 community partners in Fairfax County, whose goal is "to prevent violence, alcohol, and other drug use by youth and young adults in Virginia’s most populous county. St. Patrick's Day, Spring Break accelerates teen drinking
St. Patrick's Day celebrations which will begin today and spring college breaks in March mean it's a dangerous time for everyone to be on the roads --- especially young people who drink too much. That's the message from the Unified Prevention Coalition, a group which works to battle underage drinking. The legal drinking age in Virginia and the U.S. is 21. The Coalition has joined with the Fairfax County Police Department to use a recently received $200,000 state grant to find ways to reduce underage drinking. The grant was announced recently at the McLean Police District station. Capt. Bruce Ferguson, a UPC board member and commander of the Fairfax County Police Youth Services Division, said grant money will help the coalition get better …
