When I first told my parents I was a vegetarian (who occasionally eats fish), my Irish, meat-and-potato-eating father stared blankly at me and stammered. "What do you mean? How?" he asked, less out of judgment and more out of sheer confusion. "What do you eat?" I've gotten that reaction roughly one out of every three times I've told friends, families and strangers that I don't eat meat. So I can imagine the reaction vegans get when they tell people they don't eat meat, or any other animal products, including milk, cheese, eggs, yogurt, gelatin and honey, among others.
