Metro will perform system rebuilding work on every line in the system for the weekend of April 26-28. On Sunday, the system will open early to accommodate runners in the Nike Women's Half Marathon. Sunday, Metro will open at 5 a.m. for the Nike Women's Half Marathon and runners can access the start line from Metro Center (Red/Blue/Orange lines), Federal Triangle (Blue/Orange lines) or Archives (Yellow/Green lines). This weekend marks the end of Metro's "Break for Blossoms," in which the transit agency has paused scheduled track work to accommodate crowds attending the 2013 Cherry Blossom festival. Metro will triple the number of surveillance cameras in rail cars as part of a new security system.
Metro plans to triple the number of surveillance cameras throughout the Metrorail system—increasing the number of cameras to about 6,000—and will install them inside Metro rail cars for the first time ever, according to the Associated Press. The Vienna Metro station was recently ranked No. 3 on a top 10 list of stations with the most crime in Virginia by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. The expansion could cost an estimated $6.5 million, only some of which would come from federal grants, according to The Washington Examiner. Jim Moran (D-8th district) have introduced a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would authorize studying Metrorail's possible expansion beyond Vienna into Centreville and other areas of Northern Virginia. Vienna on the list of 10 most dangerous stations in WMATA security report released Monday.
The Vienna Metro station was ranked No. 3 on a top 10 list of stations with the most crime in Virginia by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Most of the crime increase on the Metro systemwide is attributable to a 30 percent increase in snatches of small electronic devices and pickpockets, according to WMATA's 2012 security report, released Monday. There were 671 pick-pocketing incidents and electronic snatchings on the Metro system overall in 2012, up from 520 incidents in 2011. Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn will discuss the report Thursday during his security report to the Metro Board Safety and Security Committee. The report was released to the public Monday. Inauguration Day 2009 set the all time ridership record for Metro at about 1.54 million trips on rail and bus combined. The rail ridership in 2009 alone was 1.12 million trips. Metro is preparing for a crowded system this year as well, spokesman Dan Stessel told Patch. WMATA estimates 600,000 to 800,000 people will use Metrorail for the 2013 inauguration events. Metro has been working with external partners like the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police and other agencies involved in inauguration activities to help alleviate some of the crowding that plagued metro during the 2009 inauguration. Getting on the Metro from Vienna won't be so easy this weekend. Both of Vienna's metro stations -- Vienna and Dunn Loring -- will be closed to the public between 10 p.m. Friday and closing Sunday as crews integrate track signals for the new Silver Line extension. West Falls Church Station will also be closed for the project. According to Metro, riders will have to take shuttle buses from the affected stations to East Falls Church, where they can rejoin the Orange Line. Express shuttle buses will operate between Vienna and East Falls Church only, while local shuttle buses will operate between Vienna and East Falls Church with intermediate stops at Dunn Loring and West Falls Church stations. Morning entry peak ridership has increased 37.5 percent since 1995.
Ridership at the Vienna Metro station has increased by more than one-third since the mid-1990s, according to Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority data. The number of morning weekday commuters who enter the Vienna station has increased from 6,990 in 1995 to 9,614 in 2012, Greater Greater Washington reported.
