Surveillance Cameras Coming to Your Metro Car

Metro will triple the number of surveillance cameras in rail cars as part of a new security system.

Metro plans to triple the number of surveillance cameras throughout the Metrorail system—increasing the number of cameras to about 6,000—and will install them inside Metro rail cars for the first time ever, according to the Associated Press. The Vienna Metro station was recently ranked No. 3 on a top 10 list of stations with the most crime in Virginia by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. The expansion could cost an estimated $6.5 million, only some of which would come from federal grants, according to The Washington Examiner. "We have no greater responsibility than protecting the safety of our customers, visitors and employees," Metro spokesman Philip Stewart told The Washington Examiner. "To that end, we are in the …

Will Metrorail Extend the Orange Line Past Vienna?

Congressmen Gerry Connolly and Jim Moran recently introduced legislation that would study the extension of Metrorail into Centreville, Woodbridge and the Richmond Highway corridor.

Pipe dream or forward-thinking?  Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11th district) and Rep. Jim Moran (D-8th district) have introduced a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would authorize studying Metrorail's possible expansion beyond Vienna into Centreville and other areas of Northern Virginia.  The Northern Virginia Metrorail Extension Act (H.R. 907), which is now before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, specifically cites the idea of extending the Orange line into Centreville. It also proposes studying the possibility of extending the yellow line along the Route One corridor and the blue line along the I-95 corridor to Woodbridge.  “Residents in Prince William and western Fairfax County already experience some of…

The Vienna Metro station was ranked No. 3 on a top 10 list of stations with the most crime in Virginia by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. There were 671 pick-pocketing incidents and electronic snatchings on the Metro system overall in 2012, up from 520 incidents in 2011. Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn will discuss the report Thursday during his security report to the Metro Board Safety and Security Committee. The report was released to the public Monday. Gordon, in the case I am referring to in January 2012 the robber was caught within minutes thanks to a dye pack and an alert citizen. With regard to "magic wands and time turners" I have absolutely no idea what you are trying to say. You are the one making suppositions on how the statistics are collected, I merely point out zero arrests at Vienna Metro, and compare that with some of the other …   more ›

I rode the Metro on Saturday from Union Station to Vienna. This is a distance of about 18 miles. The trip took 2 hours. This is not an isolated incident, but a regular occrence. These people do not know how to run a railroad. They perform like they have never run a railroad. What Metro has devolved into is a massive retirement program for a few people who unfortunately happen to be responsible …   more ›

Taking Metro to the 2013 Inauguration

When is metro running? Which stations are closed? How much will it cost? Vienna Patch has you covered.

Inauguration Day 2009 set the all time ridership record for Metro at about 1.54 million trips on rail and bus combined. The rail ridership in 2009 alone was 1.12 million trips. Metro is preparing for a crowded system this year as well, spokesman Dan Stessel told Patch. WMATA estimates 600,000 to 800,000 people will use Metrorail for the 2013 inauguration events. Metro has been working with external partners like the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police and other agencies involved in inauguration activities to help alleviate some of the crowding that plagued metro during the 2009 inauguration. The transit agency is doing everything it can to communicate with riders about their best routes and about planning ahead to help reduce congestion …

Vienna Metro Second-Busiest for Morning Commuters

Morning entry peak ridership has increased 37.5 percent since 1995.

Ridership at the Vienna Metro station has increased by more than one-third since the mid-1990s, according to Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority data. The number of morning weekday commuters who enter the Vienna station has increased from 6,990 in 1995 to 9,614 in 2012, Greater Greater Washington reported. That’s an increase of 37.5 percent in 17 years. It’s also the third-largest increase in “AM peak entries” in the Metrorail system among stations that existed in 1995—only Shady Grove and Union Station have had higher rates of growth and Union Station is now the busiest station in the morning peak period. “The AM peak is the 'purest' ridership period for measuring commuting. The vast majority of trips at that time of day…
