Despite increasingly heavy rain Monday morning, voter turnout for the 2013 Vienna Town Council elections wasn't any slower than in years past. As of 9:05 a.m., 145 voters had cast ballots at the Vienna Community Center — a number that wasn't breaking any records but was certainly in line with years past, election workers said. "It's not unusual," one worker said. In last year's elections, about 4.97 percent of Vienna's 11,218 active registered voters — around 558 people — cast ballots. The average turnout over the past five elections is 7.96 percent of the town's active registered voters, Public Information Officer Kirstyn Barr told Patch. Vice Mayor Howard Springsteen is running for reelection on May 7.
Howard Springsteen is one of three current Vienna Town Council members running for reelection in May against a new opponent. Along with incumbents Lori DiRocco and Carey Sienicki, Springsteen will face Ryan Thomas, a 32-year-old certified public accountant in Tysons Corner. Springsteen, 57, currently serves as Vienna’s Vice Mayor after first being elected in 2009 and successfully reelected in 2011. In an interview with Patch, Springsteen said there was much he was proud of and much more he hoped to accomplish during two more years. Andrew Eves: I don't really have a gripe, per se, but my observation or concern stands, that adding more busses to Maple Avenue MAY add to traffic congestion by continually stopping and blocking the right lane.
