Vienna Police asking residents to keep better eye on their belongings.
While Vienna Police are investigating two larcenies at Panera Bread on Maple Avenue, they're asking residents to pay close attention to their belongings when they're out to eat or shopping at local stores. The most recent case comes this past week, when a woman was confronted by a fellow customer before her wallet was stolen. The woman told police while she was eating at Panera Bread, 136 Maple Ave, between 9:30 a.m. and noon, another woman approached her to say she "should pay better attention to her purse." When the woman left the restaurant, she realized her wallet had been taken. Similarly, at 12:30 p.m. Feb 15, a woman told police she left her purse on a table while she went to get the food she had ordered. Later that day, her bank …

If you could make a New Year's resolution for Vienna, what would it be?
More than 45 percent of Americans make a resolution every year, according to statisticbrain.com. Some people vow to live a healthier lifestyle, others promise to spend more time with family, and many say they will try to save money. As millions of Americans make resolutions to improve their lives, what could we do right here in Vienna to make it an even better place to live? Is it more community gardens? Improving traffic along Route 123? Finally quieting the ongoing noise in neighborhoods by the TSC? Seeing more businesses flourish along the Maple Ave and Church Street corridors? What is on your Vienna wish list? What is one thing you would improve in 2013? Tell us in the comment section below or blog about why you love living here!

Get your caffeine on and celebrate with a free cup or a cup for a cause.
If the first words out of your mouth every morning are, “I’ll have a large coffee”—or if you can’t even speak until after you’ve had your java fix—there's a National Holiday created especially for you. America will put staunch tea drinkers to shame on National Coffee Day on Saturday, when coffee fiends can rejoice and celebrate their beloved coffee bean with free brew from national chains. Many local cafes and businesses are participating in the national celebration. Caffe Amouri: While most coffee shops are giving away cups of joe for free, owner Michael Amouri plans to donate 10 percent of drip coffee sales to local musician Robbie Schaefer's One Voice Foundation, he said this week. "Many countries, including those that Robbie has …

"Ask the Town" is a weekly series that features Vienna Public Information Officer Kirstyn Barr answering reader questions about anything and everything Vienna. Have a question? Leave it in the comments below; we'll answer it next week I heard the Town has been looking into building a parking garage on Church Street. What's the status of this project and where can I learn more? Yes, the Town is in the process of looking into building a parking garage on Church Street, specifically at 120 Church Street NW. Should this project come to fruition, this would be the first project the Town would undertake under the Public-Private Education Facilities and Infrastructure Act of 2002 (PPEA). The act grants a public entity the opportunity to create …

With only partly cloudy skies forecast over Vienna, residents should be able to get a good view of the Perseids meteor shower set to peak this weekend. The Perseids are a meteor shower visible annually when the Earth passes through the tail of the Swift-Tuttle comet. The meteor shower has been visible for about 2,000 years, according to NASA. "The Perseids can be seen all over the sky, but the best viewing opportunities will be across the northern hemisphere," according to a 2011 NASA release. "Those with sharp eyes will see that the meteors appear to radiate from the direction of the constellation Perseus." The forecast for Saturday and Sunday nights is for partly cloudy skies with overnight low temperatures around 70 degrees. Viewing …

One editor leaves, another takes the helm of Vienna Patch
Starting today, you'll see a new face at the top of your screen each morning. Just more than two years after the day in 2010 that I arrived in Vienna to launch Vienna Patch, I'm leaving my role as editor and handing over the reins to someone else. Starting Monday, Nicole Trifone, Oakton Patch's editor, will be taking over the Vienna site. We've been great neighbors since 2010 (you may have seen her around Vienna at the baseball diamonds or at the many floods along Lawyers and Hunter Mill Roads) and I can't imagine anyone better to take on the site and move it forward. I'm not going far: For the past month, I've been transitioning to the role of Associate Regional Editor, overseeing eight of Patch's sites (soon to be nine as we plan to add…

"Ask the Town" is a weekly series that features Vienna Public Information Officer Kirstyn Barr answering reader questions about anything and everything Vienna. Have a question? Leave it in the comments below; we'll answer it next week Tenisha Mitchell: Is there any free, 24-hour public parking in Vienna? I need to find a place to park my third vehicle since my place of residence, Halstead Square, cannot accommodate it. Thank you! Kirstyn Barr: I'll begin by noting that Halstead Square is not within the Town’s limits. Having a Vienna mailing address does not automatically mean you are within the corporate limits of Town. A sure sign you do live "in town" is you pay taxes to Vienna and Fairfax County or you have a quadrant on your address …
Mark Kamil Mrad faces sentencing in October for deal to ship money in a vehicle to Middle East.
Mark Kamil Mrad, 65, of Vienna, pleaded guilty to attempted money laundering in Eastern District Court in Alexandria on Tuesday after he placed money in a vehicle and directed it to be shipped to Lebanon, the U.S. Justice Department announced. Officals said Mrad, who had been part of a federal sting operation, placed what he believed to be $100,000 inside a Jeep Grand Cherokee and ordered it to be sent to a terrorist operation in Beirut. Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and James McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office, made the announcement after the plea was accepted by United States District Judge James C. Cacheris. Mrad faces a maximum penalty of 20 years …

Town seeks names of businesses who went above and beyond in late June storm
Hundreds of thousands of people across Virginia, including many in Vienna, were without power, a refrigerator, fresh food and air conditioning after the derecho struck the area June 29. But the damage didn't completely shut Vienna down. A month later, the Town of Vienna is looking to recognize those businesses that opened their doors and made a difference -- through food service, a helping hand or morale boost -- before, during and after the storm. "We want to recognize those businesses who continually support our community in all kinds of conditions," Public Information Officer Kirstyn Barr said Monday. Typically, the town recognizes all volunteers during Mayor Jane Seeman's annual volunteer day, Barr said. "But we wanted to take this …
