Vienna Police asking residents to keep better eye on their belongings.
While Vienna Police are investigating two larcenies at Panera Bread on Maple Avenue, they're asking residents to pay close attention to their belongings when they're out to eat or shopping at local stores. The most recent case comes this past week, when a woman was confronted by a fellow customer before her wallet was stolen. The woman told police while she was eating at Panera Bread, 136 Maple Ave, between 9:30 a.m. and noon, another woman approached her to say she "should pay better attention to her purse." When the woman left the restaurant, she realized her wallet had been taken. Similarly, at 12:30 p.m. Feb 15, a woman told police she left her purse on a table while she went to get the food she had ordered. Later that day, her bank …

With only partly cloudy skies forecast over Vienna, residents should be able to get a good view of the Perseids meteor shower set to peak this weekend. The Perseids are a meteor shower visible annually when the Earth passes through the tail of the Swift-Tuttle comet. The meteor shower has been visible for about 2,000 years, according to NASA. "The Perseids can be seen all over the sky, but the best viewing opportunities will be across the northern hemisphere," according to a 2011 NASA release. "Those with sharp eyes will see that the meteors appear to radiate from the direction of the constellation Perseus." One editor leaves, another takes the helm of Vienna Patch
Starting today, you'll see a new face at the top of your screen each morning. Just more than two years after the day in 2010 that I arrived in Vienna to launch Vienna Patch, I'm leaving my role as editor and handing over the reins to someone else. Starting Monday, Nicole Trifone, Oakton Patch's editor, will be taking over the Vienna site. We've been great neighbors since 2010 (you may have seen her around Vienna at the baseball diamonds or at the many floods along Lawyers and Hunter Mill Roads) and I can't imagine anyone better to take on the site and move it forward. Mark Kamil Mrad faces sentencing in October for deal to ship money in a vehicle to Middle East.
Mark Kamil Mrad, 65, of Vienna, pleaded guilty to attempted money laundering in Eastern District Court in Alexandria on Tuesday after he placed money in a vehicle and directed it to be shipped to Lebanon, the U.S. Justice Department announced. Officals said Mrad, who had been part of a federal sting operation, placed what he believed to be $100,000 inside a Jeep Grand Cherokee and ordered it to be sent to a terrorist operation in Beirut. Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and James McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office, made the announcement after the plea was accepted by United States District Judge James C. Town seeks names of businesses who went above and beyond in late June storm
Hundreds of thousands of people across Virginia, including many in Vienna, were without power, a refrigerator, fresh food and air conditioning after the derecho struck the area June 29. But the damage didn't completely shut Vienna down. A month later, the Town of Vienna is looking to recognize those businesses that opened their doors and made a difference -- through food service, a helping hand or morale boost -- before, during and after the storm. "We want to recognize those businesses who continually support our community in all kinds of conditions," Public Information Officer Kirstyn Barr said Monday.
