Ask the Town

Ask The Town: When Are Vienna Roads Resurfaced?

This week: How the town determines which roads are paved and when.

"Ask the Town" is a weekly series that features Vienna Public Information Officer Kirstyn Barr answering reader questions about anything and everything Vienna. Have a question? Leave it in the comments below; we'll answer it next week Reader Elizabeth Hedley: We have been in our house over 22 years and our street (St Andrews Dr NE) was not in good condition to begin with, has never been resurfaced. And, I don't know of any systemic plan todo so. How does this happen or not happen? Kirstyn Barr: The Town constantly monitors the condition of streets and patch pot holes constantly. Each year, our Operations Superintendent inspects the condition of all streets in Townusing an objective rating system, which grades surface condition, cracking, …

Apparently the town has higher standards than the county does: our subdivision has one street that is in the town's limits and that one was repaved. None of the other streets in the subdivision -- which are in the same condition -- have been repaved. They also don't get plowed. I have to wonder if the county assumes we are all in the town limits since one street is.   more ›

Temps Could Climb Above 100 Friday, Saturday

The heat will be dangerous, but may not be record-breaking.

The high temperature Friday and Saturday will likely exceed 100 again in Vienna, according to the National Weather Service forecast. Under mostly sunny skies, it will reach 99 degrees Friday; on Saturday, temperatures could reach 103 with a mix of clouds and sun. The heat index both days will be above 105 degrees. Amazingly, the high temperatures on Friday may not break records. The record high at Washington Reagan National Airport for July 6 (Friday) is 103, set in 1999. The record high for July 7 (Saturday) is 102, set in 2010. These high temperatures are moving in from the Midwest, where Chicago, St. Louis and other cities were baking Thursday. “A huge area of excessive heat warnings and heat advisories have been issued across the …

According to Heavens Above, the shuttle will appear low in the northwest sky at 9:47 p.m. By 9:50 p.m., the shuttle will become brighter and appear about 45 degrees above the horizon. Subway Pedestrian Bridges Break Ground Today

Construction of Route 7 overpasses begins Monday with pile driving.

Construction begins today on the pedestrian walkway that will bring riders from Route 7 to the Silver Line station platform. The Dulles Rail Project will build two "pedestrian pavilions," one on either side of Route 7, to get passengers to the subway. The first pavilion gets under way along the westbound lanes at the old Merchant's Tire location between SAIC and The Big Screen Store. Pile driving will be starting at the Tysons Central 7 Station north pavilion near Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road (which means nearby residents will probably hear some noise during construction hours). Crews will drive steel piles into the soil to build foundations for pavilions. The pile driving will occur from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and the occasional …

Fire Damages Vienna Home

Small fire just off of Electric Ave.

Everything was quiet Tuesday afternoon on a small cul-de-sac in a neighborhood just east of downtown a day after a fire damaged a home at 8527 Betterton Court just off of Electric Ave. The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reported that at approximately 3:43 pm Monday , a neighbor called 911 stating a house was on fire and that no one was home at the time.  The FRD arrived on scene within four minutes reporting a single family residence with fire showing on the left side.  Firefighters made an aggressive interior and exterior attack bringing the fire under control in approximately five minutes, a spokesman said. It appears that the majority of the fire was limited to the exterior of the home.  The remainder of time spent on scene …
