Virginia Girls Soccer: Madison Falls After Four Overtimes

McLean scores winning goal in Liberty District semis.

Madison High School girls soccer coach Grant Massey anticipated his team's semifinal match Wednesday night against McLean would be a close game. But it seems hard to believe Massey would have anticipated how tight the game — which sends a winning team to the district championships — would actually be. And at the end of regulation Wednesday, Madison and McLean entered overtime to resolve a 0-0 tie. Still scoreless after the first overtime, they entered another. And another. And another. And during the fourth overtime, three minute away from when both teams would be forced to settle the game with penalty kicks, a McLean highlander scored, ending a hard-fought battle for the Warhawks as well as a 6-1 win streak. The loss kicks Madison (10-5) …

Virginia Girls Soccer: Madison Prepares for Liberty District Semis

Warhawks face off against McLean at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

At this time last year, Madison High School's girls soccer team saw the end of its Liberty District run with a heart-breaking loss to Fairfax High in the semifinals. But staring down the 2013 Liberty District semifinals Wednesday night, the team is hoping to reverse history and post a win against McLean — a victory that would move them on to the Liberty District Finals later this week. The team (10-4, 5-2 Liberty) is riding momentum from a number of important wins over the past week. On Monday, the Warhawks came out on top of a 2-1 overtime thriller against cross-town rival Madison High School, with Kaitlyn Dorka scoring and Michelle Paredes getting the winning goal. Last Thursday, the team finished out its regular season with a 3-1 win, …

Virginia Girls Lacrosse: Madison Wins Liberty District

After two nights of lightning delays, Warhawks top Saxons in district final.

Nobody ever said winning was easy. This weekend, the Madison High School girls lacrosse team certainly did it the hard way, taking a come-from-behind 17-9 win Saturday in the Liberty District Championships after waiting out two lightning delays on consecutive nights.  It's the third consecutive Liberty District title for the Warhawks — all of them taken in games against Langley. Madison and Langley took the field as scheduled Friday night, and the Warhawks trailed at halftime, but came out after the break and quickly took a 9-8 lead. With 16:36 left in the game and the momentum swinging in Madison’s favor, severe weather rolled in, sending fans and players scrambling for cover.  As the lightning lingered, the game was postponed until the …

Virginia Lacrosse: Madison Boys Top Langley for Liberty District TItle

Girls game postponed until 6 p.m. Saturday after lightning delays the 2013 Girls Lacrosse Liberty District Championship.

On Friday night, the Madison High School boys lacrosse team did something it hadn't done in years: post a win against  the Langley Saxons. The Warhawks defeated Langley 10-2 on the Saxons' home turf on Friday night, taking the Liberty District Championship and entering next week's tournament as a top seed. Madison and Langley — five-time district champs — both stood at 11-5 (6-1) entering last night's title game, tied with Stone Bridge (11-3, 6-1) for best record in the district. The Warhawks got off to a fast start, according to early game information from dmvlacrosse. Madison led 5-0 after the first quarter. By the third, the score was 7-1; the Saxons couldn't recover in the fourth for a win. Despite the loss, Langley will enter as the …

Virginia Lacrosse: Madison Girls, Boys Vie for Liberty District Title

Warhawks hope to sweep Friday double header at Langley.

Last year, the Madison High School girls lacrosse team avenged its sole season loss with an 18-17 thriller over Langley High School to win the Liberty District championship. On Friday, the teams are set up for a repeat of last year's title game, as the Warhawks and Saxons face off at Langley High School in McLean. And the Warhawks are hoping they'll come away with another win. Like in 2012, both Madison and Langley (10-3) have had stellar 2013 seasons. Madison (13-2) — the 2011 Virginia state champions — comes into Friday's game undefeated in the district, its only two losses coming from scrimmages earlier this season. Over the past few years, the team, under head coach Amanda Counts, has become one of the area's best programs — largely …

Photo of the Day: Warhawk Baseball Shows Colors WIth New Engine

Madison High School team shows red and black pride alongside new Vienna Volunteer Fire Department truck.

The Madison High School Warhawks take to the field, stage and court wearing black and red — and the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department's new engine takes to the streets with the same color scheme. To honor the men and women fighting fires in Vienna with the truck, the school's baseball team posed with the engine for the cover photo to their media guide (see picture at right). Like the engine, which residents have reported blazing through the streets, the Warhawks have gotten off to a roaring start in the 2013 season. Resident Nancy Socher reports the varsity team is 14-1 — rebounding from a season-opening loss to 14 have straight victories, "including winning the Mingo Bay Classic Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC over spring break," she wrote…
