Marshall Wrestlers Finish Historic Season

Crawford's finish highest ever for a Marshall heavyweight, team earns 22-6 record overall

Marshall Senior Matt Crawford placed third in the heavyweight division of the 2012 Virginia State High School Wrestling Championships last Saturday at Robinson High School.  Crawford won four matches including a two to one victory in his third place match against Yorktown's Charlie Wheldon. Crawford's only defeat was against two time State Champion DaQuinte Timbers from Freedom High School. Crawford's finish was the highest state finish ever for a Marshall Heavyweight. Crawford's teammate, James Cusack, took eighth place in the State Championships at 113 pounds, despite competing with an injured shoulder.  Overall, Marshall finished the wrestling season with a 22-6 dual meet record, second in the Liberty District, sixth in the Northern …

Marshall Wrestlers Make History

Sixth-place Northern Region finish is highest in Liberty District; two Madison wrestlers also win weight classes

Marshall High School's wrestling team finished sixth of 32 teams at the Northern Region High School Championships this past weekend at Hayfield High School. Marshall was the highest finishing team from the Liberty District; it was also the Statesmen's best finish since 1993. Senior James Cusack led the way for the Statesmen, winning the 113 pound championship in a convincing 8-0 major decision. Matt Crawford was runner-up in the heavyweight division. Both qualified for the State Championships next weekend at Robinson High School. A total of seven Marshall wrestlers finished in the top eight of their respective weight classes. Joining Cusack and Crawford were Sam White (195) and Christian Valencia (106), each of whom finished sixth, and …
