A Weekend For Kyllo

'Vienna Idol' finals, Kyllopalooza music festival raise money for memorial fund in honor of Madison alumna

The Vienna Town Green will be filled with music from aspiring locals this weekend -- a sight, if Khristin Kyllo had lived to see it, that would have made the Madison High School alumna flash her "million dollar smile." Friends and family of the 18-year-old rising softball star at Princeton University, who died unexpectedly last winter in her dorm room, say music was part of everything Kyllo did, and in the year since her death, have used it to honor her. This year, those efforts have fallen on the same weekend, as the finals of "Vienna Idol," a competition launched this year in Kyllo's honor, coincide with the second annual "Kyllopalooza," a festival featuring local musicians. The timing, organizers say, was pure coincidence, but one that …

Musicians Compete in Vienna Idol Semis Today

Nine contestants vie for spot in finals of fundraiser to benefit the Khristin Kyllo Memorial Fund

After three qualifying rounds, nine Vienna-area acts — ranging from young teens to a married couple — will compete Sunday in the semifinals of Vienna Idol. Caffe Amouri, Whole Foods and The Business Bank brought the local spin on the popular "American Idol" competition to town in honor of Khristin Kyllo, the 18-year-old rising softball star at Princeton University who died unexpectedly last winter in her dorm room. Proceeds from the competition are going to the memorial fund in Kyllo's name to honor the Madison High School alumna "with a heart of gold and a million dollar smile." The semifinalists will be split into two rounds Sunday during Viva!Vienna!, one at 11:30 a.m. and another at 2:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Caffe Amouri. …

Music Contest Keeps Kyllo's Spirit Alive

Caffe Amouri and Whole Foods sponsor first 'Vienna Idol' to benefit Khristin Kyllo Memorial Fund

If there's one thing Khristin Kyllo loved, besides the softball field, it was music. Friends and family of the 18-year-old rising star at Princeton University, who died unexpectedly last winter in her dorm room, say music was part of everything Kyllo did, and in the year since her death, have used it to honor the Madison High School alumna  "with a heart of gold and a million dollar smile." In that spirit, two community groups are bringing their own version of a popular national singing contest to Vienna, offering residents of all ages to be crowned 'Vienna Idol' and giving the proceeds to the memorial fund in Kyllo's name. Caffe Amouri and Whole Foods kicked off the town's first ever contest Tuesday with the first qualifying round of the …

Kyllopalooza: "Dream Big"

Benefit concert honors the life of 2010 Madison High School graduate

Through all the years, the wins and losses, that Erin Kavanaugh had known her friend and teammate Khristin Kyllo, there were a few things that never changed. That Kyllo would spend hours searching for new bands and music so she'd be the first to know about them; that her life ebbed and flowed between "her songs," the ones she chose for morning rides to school or basketball practice; and that seeing anyone sad would drive her crazy, because "she wanted everyone to be happy." So it only made sense to honor the life of 18-year-old Kyllo,  who died unexpectedly in January from what her family and friends believe were complications of an unexplainable seizure disorder, with an outdoor benefit concert, featuring up-and-coming Vienna bands that …

Fantastic event. Kudos to Terry Belt (and many others) for organizing this and the bands for performing. Great to see both our State Senator and State Congressperson (Chap Peterson and Mark Keam) presenting to Kyllo's parents, Tom and Julie. Very cool, Vienna.   more ›

A Win For Kyllo

Warhawks don number of former point guard in 57-39 win over Langley

Though they played on Langley High School's turf on Friday night, Madison's sense of team spirit was the one that overwhelmed the floor. Friday's game was the first for the team following the death of former point guard Khristin Kyllo, who died Thursday in her Princeton University dorm room. Madison players wore red ribbons in their hair and Kyllo's number 14 on their arms in her honor. The student cheering section, which usually goes to the boys games, came out to show their support as well. Dressed in matching red shirts, some carried signs bearing Kyllo's number and a heart on one side with the words "I" and "Believe" on the reverse, part of the chant "I believe that we will win" which the students performed several times. "I didn't …
