By Treeby Brown Madison Crew started the 2013 spring season in dominating fashion with four first place finishes for both the men’s and women’s First and Second Varsity Eights at the Polar Bear Regatta on the Occoquan River. The men’s 3rd eight and the women’s junior eight also made strong debuts with second place finishes in their heats. The toughest competition for many of the boats came from Robinson High School in Fairfax. Despite chilly weather and winds that made the floating starts especially challenging for coxswains, all the Madison boats stayed strong to place in the top two of their races. The Women’s First Varsity Eight boat, featuring several seniors who row will for Division I schools next year, had perhaps the most dominant…

By Treeby Brown What is the best way to inspire your crew team, especially novice rowers, in the dead of winter with on the water training a distance month away? Host an “Ergatta,” of course! Last Saturday, James Madison High School hosted its first ever “Ergatta” featuring teams of two, four and eight rowers racing for distance on rowing machines, better known as ergs. More than 70 Madison novice and varsity rowers as well as additional rowers from Oakton, Thomas Jefferson and West Springfield took part in the three hour event at the Madison high school cafeteria. “We had an amazing turnout for our first year and hope to have even more school participate next year," Madison Head Coach Paul Allbright said. “The Ergatta was a great way…

Madison Crew had its most successful showing at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in team history this weekend, as the women's second eight took first place. It was Madison’s first ever gold medal at Stotesbury, the world's oldest and largest high school regatta. It features more than 5,000 athletes representing more than 195 schools and riding in more than 900 boats. Athletes converge on the Schuylkill River from schools as far north as Canada and as far west as Texas. Madison took nine boats to the event. The winning women's second eight finished a full boat length ahead of the second-place boa, Holy Spirit (NJ). The women's first eight fought through a very competitive field, powering up the course and just overtaking Winter Park (FL) in the…

Team hopes for high finish at the world's largest high school rowing competition
This weekend, Madison High School Crew Coach Paul Allbright will find himself in the same spot he was a year ago: Coming off a state championship win and gunning for a medal in the prestigious Stotesbury Cup Regatta, a race held each year on the Schuylkill River that draws more than 5,000 high school rowers and 10,000 spectators from around the world. But this time, getting to the race as a nationally recognized team is exactly where his team expected to be. And they're ready, he said. When the girls' first and second eight boats captured first place at the Virginia State Rowing Association (VASRA) meet last year, their speed and agility in the water took the rowers by surprise, Allbright said. But this year, with experience under their …

It is wonderful to watch the team continue to thrive--wish I could have been there at those last 500 yards to the finish line to hear the very familiar waterside mantra shouted by parents, fellow crew mates and their families that I know so well, "MAD-i-son, MAD-i-son!". Congratulations to all the boats..especially to the women’s-1st and 2nd 8--simply the best! Shout out to the coaches too. Best …   more ›
