Virginia Crew: Madison Womens’ First Eight Brings Home the Gold from Stotesbury Regatta

Warhawk crew continues to roll.

Madison High School's womens crew brought home silver and gold from the Stotesbury Cup Regatta held last weekend in Philadelphia.  This was the capstone of Madison’s most successful showing in team history with three boats in the finals and five boats reaching the semifinals. After a disappointing third place finish at the 2012 Stotesbury Cup, the women’s first varsity eight powered past National Cathedral by more than seven seconds to capture the gold at this prestigious regatta.  Rowing for the Women’s First Eight were  Hannah Brown, Zoe Kalousis, Karen Munyon, Carolina Ratcliff, George Ratcliff, Lexy Shannon, Caroline Williams, Grace Williams, and coxswain Sarah Voigt.    The women’s second eight brought home hardware once again, …

Crew: Novice Boats, Women's 8 Take First

Madison High School rowers dominated at two East Coast races last weekend.

Madison High School's rowers may have spanned the East Coast to compete last weekend, but they shared the same kind of success: Top finishes against teams from across the country. The Warhawk Novice rowers had a strong showing Saturday in the Smokey Jacobs regatta on the Occoquan. The Madison Freshmen Women’s Eight took first in the final, and the Men’s Novice 4 and the Freshmen 8 took first in their heats.  The Men’s Novice 8 took second place in their heat. On Sunday, Madison’s varsity rowers competed in the 5th Manny Flicks of the season, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Scholastic Rowing Association in Philadelphia.  “Manny Flicks” are named after Manuel Flicks, a father who in the 1950s organized the first series of what originally were …

Crew: Madison First Eight Emerges as Force

More success for Warhawk crew.

It was another banner day for Madison Crew at Saturday’s  Darrell Winslow Regatta,  with four first place finishes, three second places and  two third place finishes. The men’s team is enjoying what is perhaps their best season ever.  While the women’s team has been earning headlines with their dominant performance over the last several years, the men’s team this year has emerged as force with which to be reckoned.  Through its first four regattas, the men’s first eight (1 V) is undefeated by another Virginia school.  Its only loss has been to regional powerhouse St. Albans (DC) which bested the Madison men by only two seconds earlier this season.    At last weekend’s Darrell Winslow Regatta, the Madison men’s 1 V took first place with a …

If we feature the accomplishments of a specific team (in this case boys first eight (1V) boat) is it possible to list the names of the atheletes. Always nice to see your name in press as an athelete, and the local community who may know the boys/girls can continue to support and encourage them.   more ›

Crew: Madison Women Keep Win Streak Alive

Warhawks continue undefeated season at Walter Mess Regatta

The Madison Women’s First and Second Varsity Eight boats continued their undefeated seasons with decisive wins Saturday over National Cathedral School (DC) and Walt Whitman High School (MD) respectively at the Walter Mess Regatta on the Occoquan. Saturday’s regatta featured 26 boats representing schools as far away as Ohio, giving Madison its toughest competition yet. Nevertheless,  Madison boats still finished strongly in all their races. In a tight Men’s First Varsity Eight race, the Madison Men were edged out of first place by just more than two seconds by regional power house St. Albans (DC) in a crowded field of sixteen boats. The Women’s Third Varsity Eight boat also rowed to a second place finish in the final, just a few seconds …

Crew: Madison Cruises to Seven First Place Finishes

Strong showing for Warhawks at the Regional Park Regatta.

Of the nine Madison High School boats at the Regional Park Regatta on the Occoquan on Saturday, seven rowed to first places finishes and two other boats placed in strong seconds as the Warhawks continued to show early domination of the region's teams this season. The Madison Women’s First Varsity Eight again shut out the competition by an impressive margin, beating Oakton with open water with a time of 5:42.10. But the story of the day was the  adaptability of the Men’s First Eight, who raced to a first place finish in a backup boat after their regular boat was damaged on Friday, with a time of 5:01:60.   While the both the Women’s and Men’s Second Varsity Eight scored first place finishes for the second time this season both with wins …

Madison Crew Awaits Outcome of VHSL Decision on Dropping Sport

Virginia High School League to reconsider Wednesday its decision to drop crew from its list of sanctioned high school sports, citing concerns about insurance and funding.

The Virginia High School League this week is reconsidering its December decision to drop crew from its list of sanctioned school activities—a move that could slow the growth of crew at many high schools, some Northern Virginia parents say. What that means for Madison High School's powerhouse crew program — whose boats last year earned a gold medal at the international Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia, along with another Virginia state championship, among other accolades — isn't immediately clear. Membership in the VHSL — a private, nonprofit organization based in Charlottesville that sets high school sports and activity regulations —comes with a number of benefits for most sports, including catastrophic insurance coverage and funding in …

Madison Crew Preps for 2013 Season

Warhawks host "Ergatta" as the boys and girls crew teams hope for another championship season.

By Treeby Brown What is the best way to inspire your crew team, especially novice rowers, in the dead of winter with on the water training a distance month away? Host an “Ergatta,” of course! Last Saturday, James Madison High School hosted its first ever “Ergatta” featuring teams of two, four and eight rowers racing for distance on rowing machines, better known as ergs.  More than 70  Madison novice and varsity rowers as well as additional rowers from Oakton, Thomas Jefferson and West Springfield took part in the three hour event at the Madison high school cafeteria.    “We had an amazing turnout for our first year and hope to have even more school participate next year," Madison Head Coach Paul Allbright said. “The Ergatta was a great way…

Madison Students Earn International Rowing Success

Ratcliff sisters receive silver medals in respective events at World Rowing Junior Championships

After a grueling summer preparing for the World Rowing Junior Championships, the Ratcliff sisters finished their summer break with silver medals around their necks. Georgia and Carolina Ratcliff both rowed for the U.S. Junior National team — Georgia on the junior women's four and Carolina for the junior women's eight — and both U.S. boats walked away with second-place finishes in Plovdiv, Bulgaria last month.  "It was incredible," said Georgia, a senior at Madison High School. "It was great to win silver, and even better to have my sister be there with me and win, as well." Carolina described the intense atmosphere before the championship — starting with tryouts during which "the coaches are nothing but hard on you" to the two-a-day …
