Maple Ave Restaurant Will Expand to Arlington

Vienna small business has plans to open another location in Virginia Square.

Maple Avenue Restaurant owners Tim Ma and Joey Hernandez will be taking their knack for food down the road to Arlington in the coming months. The couple, which has run the successful fusion restaurant near Maple Ave and Lawyers Road for about three years, has plans to open another eatery called "Water & Wall" at 3811 N. Fairfax Drive, in the space formerly occupied by Pines of Florence. What's in a name? The new restaurant nomer is the intersection of the apartment the couple lived in during their time in New York City, where Ma attended the French Culinary Institute and interned at Momofuku Ko, according to Donrockwell.com Hernandez told Patch there would be more details available about the new space after everything is worked out between…

Vienna Businesses Brace for Sequestration

Eateries, music venues worry about customer base as Congress struggles to make a deal.

What's clear as Virginia and the nation count down toward a March 1 sequestration deadline is that cuts are real and appear, at the moment, to be coming. But how the cuts will change the way people do business in Vienna and throughout Northern Virginia is harder to define—and for that reason owners are worried, not just for their own bottom line but for the customers they serve. "I am concerned, but far more for my customers than for me,"  said Michael Amouri, who owns local coffee shop Caffe Amouri on Church Street. "Several have talked about their concerns and worries. They have families, and lives, that are being affected." Thursday, residents and businesses remained frustrated at what they called a lack of leadership in Congress. …

Vienna Chef Tim Ma: DC's 'Hottest Chef'

Co-owner of Maple Ave Restaurant now competes in Eater's East Coast competition.

The "hottest chef" in the Washington, DC region, according to its restaurant-goers, is Vienna's own Tim Ma. And now, the owner of Maple Ave Restaurant has a chance at taking the Northeast divison title too. Ma came out on top of several rounds of voting late last week in Eater DC's search for the most attractive chef in the region. In the final vote, Ma beat out chef Bryan Voltaggio — of Volt and Range, among others — in a 54.9 to 45.1 percent vote.  For the full voting results, check out Eater DC's semifinal and final polls. Ma, an engineer-turned-chef, opened Maple Ave Restaurant with fiancée and co-owner Joey Hernandez three and a half years ago. Since then, the pair has picked up plenty of awards, for everything from green business …

Maple Ave Named One of Washington's Top 100 Restaurants

Restaurant picked in Washingtonian Magazine's roundup of best eateries in the region

Looking for one of the best eateries in Washington, DC? You don't have to look farther than Maple Ave Restauarant, which was recently named one of the area's top 100 restaurants by Washingtonian Magazine. It was also recently named by the magazine as the No. 3 "readers' choice" favorite eatery.  (And if that wasn't enough, Chef Tim Ma was ranked No. 3 by the magazine last month, too). "We can only say that this year has definitely been a great one so far," said co-owner Joey Hernandez, noting the honor "is just awesome." "We are lucky that we get to do what we love and humbled by the continued support for MAR," she told Patch. The restaurant has come a long way since it opened in August 2009. The restaurant, located in the former Anita's …

Police Investigate Inoperable Grenade Found on Maple Ave

Explosive device was real, Vienna police say, but its internal components had been removed.

The Vienna Police Department said Wednesday it is continuing to investigate an inert grenade left earlier this morning in the parking lot of Merchant Tire on Maple Avenue. Police received a call around 7:14 a.m. about the grenade outside the main entrance to the tire shop, located at 141 Maple Ave W.  Officers shut down the road between Center Street and Lawyers Road for more than two hours, directing rush hour traffic onto side streets as the Fairfax County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit worked to remove the device. Once the device was removed to a safer location, the unit discovered the grenate was real but "its internal components had been removed, making it inoperable," police said. Police also evacuated several local businesses, …

Vienna Businesses Lobby for $250K Grant

Maple Ave Restaurant and Maverick Mosaics are asking for your support.

Two small businesses in Vienna are gunning to win a $250,000 grant awarded by Living Social and Chase. The grant program, called "Mission: Small Business," will award up to 12 $250,000 grants to small businesses across the country. The campaign is also supported by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Bonnie Fitzgerald, owner of Maverick Mosaics Art School & Studio, and Joey Hernandez, general manager of Maple Ave Restaurant, answered a few questions for Patch about the program. What would this grant mean for your business? Joey Hernandez (Maple Ave): "The idea for Maple Ave was born many years ago as our dream. We knew that the journey to our dream of opening a restaurant was tough but we both wanted to at least try to accomplish it. We opened …

Food Trucks Search For A Home in Tysons

Maple Ave. Express, Top Dog and others entice office workers with gourmet offerings

Working in Tysons Corner usually means a few things: Thousands of people, traffic headaches, non-existent sidewalks and minimal choices for lunch outside of chain restaurants, company delis or cafeterias and mall food courts. What can a discriminating foodie do to break up the routine? According to a few brave food entrepreneurs, the answer is food trucks. They’re outfitting old ice cream or catering trucks as mobile kitchens, targeting certain quadrants of the Vienna and McLean areas (and parts of Fairfax, Falls Church and Reston) to deliver creative, high-quality lunches to hungry workers. The most recent trucks on the business park scene include Maple Avenue Restaurant’s MAX (Maple Ave. Express), a truck specializing in hot sandwiches; …
