The Marshall High School boys basketball team finished the Joe Cascio Classic Varsity Holiday Basketball Tournament at 1-2 over three games held Dec. 27 to 29. In game one, the Marshall boys basketball team suffered from a slow start and a tough draw to lose their opening game against a good J.E.B. Stuart Raiders team. The Statesmen were unable to dig themselves out of a deep hole and came up just short against a Raiders team seeking revenge for a loss to the Statesmen earlier in the season. Stuart came ready to play and opened up a 17 point half time lead. The Statesmen found themselves trailing by 12 at the end of the third period before finally kicking it into a higher gear in the final six minutes of play. Marshall poured in 27 points …

AP scores rise while those for IB dipped slightly, Fairfax County Public Schools says
The number of Fairfax County Public Schools students taking higher-level courses is rising, the system said this week. Data released by the system shows a significant increase in the total number of students enrolled in classes as well as the number of exams given. It also shows a higher percentage of students are earning a passing score on Advanced Placement exams, though the percentage of International Baccalaureate students scoring 4 or higher on their exams dipped slightly. FCPS Superintendent Jack Dale said in a statement the increase can be attributed in part to more access to AP and IB coursework and differentiated instruction at the schools. “The increases in AP and IB participation are the result of an emphasis on expanding access…

There are several ways the community can donate to the "Keep Calm and Honor On" campaign.
If you happen to see a Fairfax County Police helicopter hovering over George C. Marshall High School on Thursday, don't be alarmed. It's all part of the school's "Keep Calm and Honor On" campaign, benefiting the children who have lost a parent in the line-of-duty. Marshall's DECA chapter is collecting donations and selling T-shirts to help distribute 250 "honor bags" for these children, who will visit Washington in May during National Police Week. Additionally, the DECA chapter will collect donations at Ledo's Pizza in Falls Church from 4-11 p.m. Monday (today). Just mention "DECA/COPS" and 20 percent of your purchase will be donated to "Keep Calm and Honor On." A second community fundraiser will be held from 2:30-9 p.m. Dec. 11 at Lava …

Tell us what Marshall and Madison graduates should know as they step out on their own
We've all sat through graduation speeches (and other graduation-related remarks) that were painful. Painful is a kind adjective. My own high school principal, at a National Honor Society candle lighting, compared us all to geese and tadpoles. Not a flock of geese, or a family of toads -- just the animals themselves. I don't remember much about the speech other than students rolling their eyes and parents sneaking glances to see if the woman was serious. But more often than not, each of us also has that one piece of advice -- whether from a speech to a crowd or in a private note from a treasured advisor -- that sticks; words that are visited time and time again as you pass through life's phases. Words you keep. What was the best graduation …

Vienna school scores high on local list of Washington Post rankings
Madison High School came in 15th among Washington area schools on Washington Post education reporter Jay Mathews annual Challenge Index. The index score is the number of college-level tests given at a school in 2011 divided by the number of graduates that year. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for free and reduced lunch (Subs. lunch), an indicator of poverty, and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence, (E&E). More than 170 public and private schools are on the local list; 1,900 are included nationally. Marshall High School, which was named No. 3 in Virginia by U.S. News & World Report, earned No. 54 on…
