'Big Bird' gets a mention, 'sequestration' doesn't in the first presidential debate between President Barack Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney Wednesday night.
ARLINGTON — If the crowd at Busboys and Poets in Shirlington was any indication, Northern Virginia Democrats wanted President Barack Obama to go on the attack Wednesday night during the first presidential debate. What they got instead was a relatively calm commander-in-chief, one who took the occasional shot at his Republican rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, but not the inspirational orator whose speeches draw thousands to arenas. Even Democrats were hard-pressed to call the night a win for Obama. Most settled on calling it a tie, or even gave the night to Romney. And while many Republicans and Democrats had similar thoughts on performance, they disagreed about whether it mattered. "Obama looked really calm and didn't get …

Virginia governor delivers prime time address Tuesday night.
The "American dream" is at stake in the November presidential election, said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell in a prime-time speech at the Republican National Convention Tuesday night. "I don't have to tell any of you: this is a tough economy. We all have friends, family and neighbors who've lost their jobs and homes," McDonnell (R) said. "Worse, they've lost their hope. And their lost hope is why we need a big change this November. This election is about restoring the American dream." Like many of the convention speeches Tuesday, McDonnell's address criticized a remark made by President Barack Obama (D) during a July campaign stop in Roanoke that Republicans say suggested business owners did not build their success on their own. "We need a …

Taxes, growing economy, government contracting on the minds of U.S. Senate candidates at Technology Town Hall.
U.S. Senate hopefuls Tim Kaine (D) and George Allen (R) discussed taxes, growing and keeping talent, government contracting and cybersecurity at a technology town hall sponsored by the Northern Virginia Technology Council at Microsoft's Reston offices on Thursday. The forum was the first joint appearance by the candidates since Allen won the Republican primary earlier this month. Kaine outlined his impact as governor of Virginia (2006-10), attracting new businesses to the state during the deepest recession in 70 years. He is running on a platform of keeping and attracting talent (by investing in education, offering more opportunities for veterans), investing in infrastructure (Rail to Dulles shows "we can build things again") and being …

Virginia governor tells WTOP's Mark Segraves "apparently there's some vetting going on."
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell may still be in the running for the VP slot with former Gov. Mitt Romney, the GOP presumptive nominee in the presidential race. On Tuesday morning's "Ask the Governor" program on radio station WTOP, the governor told host Mark Segraves that "apparently there's some vetting going on," by the Romney campaign. Instead of denying the vetting, as he has done in the past, McDonnell said Tuesday it would be best to ask the Romney campaign. McDonnell attended a Park City, Utah retreat with Romney and other GOP leaders and donors over the weekend. Some pundits said Romney used the retreat to size up potential VP choices. McDonnell attended a luncheon for Romney on Tuesday in D.C. Romney travels to Northern Virgina on …

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.
U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Government needs to embrace spirit of innovation in order for America to regain its place in the world economy, Republican presidential candidate says.
America was founded on the spirit of innovation, but if it does not recapture some of that thinking, its economic power may be a thing of the past. That was the main message of Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney as he spoke to nearly 1,000 people at the Hyatt Regency Reston on Friday. The breakfast session was sponsored by the Northern Virginia Technology Council and the Consumer Electronics Association as part of NVTC's Presidential Series. "Where did America's culture of prosperity come from?" former Massachusetts Gov. Romney asked. "The first settlers left lives that they were comfortable with to make a better life. The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence said our rights don't come from government, but from God and…

Big Turd wants to fund his tax cut on the back of Big Bird. Mitt and Ann refuse to show their tax returns for 2005-2009, since their accountants said they paid about 14%, the only reason to hide those returns is the IRS amnesty for rich tax cheats with secret Swiss accounts. After the UBS whistle blower case the IRS let rich tax cheats "pay the fine" instead of trial for the felony they committed…   more ›
