Nominate Vienna Volunteers for Mayor's Award

Mayor M. Jane Seeman seeks names for 12th annual volunteer recognition day.

Know someone who has made a difference in Vienna? Now is your chance to put their name forward for Mayor Jane Seeman's 12th annual volunteer recognition day. The deadline is March 1. Seeman started the awards when she became mayor in 2000. Since then, hundreds of residents have been recognized, from those that give time to local organizations and nonprofit leaders to local business owners or neighbors making a difference in their corner of Vienna. Photos: A Night For Volunteers

More than 60 volunteers, groups honored at 11th Annual Volunteer Recognition Day

To some, Don Swift is another friend and neighbor. But to many Vienna residents, he's better known as Santa Claus, the one who spends much of each Christmas Season ringing a lone bell outside the Giant Supermarket on Maple Avenue. His sparkling eyes and snow white beard help raise thousands of dollars for the Salvation Army (despite, by some accounts, his horribly off-tune singing). Swift's was one of the many stories shared Tuesday at Vienna's 11th Annual Volunteer Recognition day, a celebration started by Mayor Jane Seeman through the "Vienna At Your Service" program "to celebrate and promote volunteerism in the community."
