John spent the first twelve years of his life in Puerto Rico, a fact to which he attributes his love of bold color. His work, in particular the Latin Pop series, combines visual, literal, lyrical and musical influences. The female form dominates a vast majority of his canvases. The figures he paints are large and curvaceous, but their mass speaks more about strength and presence than physical size. At times, these female subjects represent John's mother and the women who raised him, whose larger-than-life personas taught him the importance of self-expression. Often, they illustrate his own connection to femininity, defying gender roles and machismo traditionally dictated by his Latino heritage. John strives to make art that is accessible and promotes diversity. His work is in various collections across the US and Europe. He is also a contributor to the Arts section of the Huffington Post.
