Voters Resoundingly Re-Elect Mark Keam to Another Term in House of Delegates

Comstock-Murphy race a squeaker.

Residents of the 35th District in Vienna sent Democrat Mark Keam back to Richmond for another term Tuesday.

"I especially thank my Republican opponent Leiann Luse for valiant efforts," Keam said. "I know how hard it is to run for office and I admire her courage."

With all 20 precincts reporting Tuesday at about 11 p.m., Keam bested his opponent Republican Leiann Luse 65.90 percent to 33.93 percent. Keam received 14,591 votes to Luse's 7,513 votes.

Barbara Comstock: 14,935/50.66%

Election Day in Vienna

Voting at the Vienna Community Center, as of about 4:45 p.m., stood at 1,302 out of a possible 3,250 voters, according to Karen Akers, assistant chief, who was waiting for the standard wave of "after-work" voters up to 7 p.m. Tuesday was her fourth election and she planned to work today from pre-dawn to post-dusk.

Vienna moms Lisa Calhoun and Kathy Brown came out to vote Tuesday because "it could matter," they said. "He [Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli] just seems a little too far to the right," said Calhoun.

"I have doubts about the controversies surrounding him [Cuccinelli]," Brown said. The two stopped to discuss the issues with children and dog Maggie in tow just outside the Vienna Community Center, where a steady stream of voters were heading inside to vote Tuesday afternoon.

Vienna resident Carol Lewis, a mother of three who runs her own personal concierge service Time to Spare, and was volunteering for Democrats Tuesday, said Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe is "someone who is going to look after women's issues." She predicted Fairfax County Sheriff's candidate Stacey Kincaid will win election and become the first woman sheriff for the county.

Republican supporters Richard McCarty and Simon Clough were busy handing out literature to voters. "We need tax reform," said McCarty. "We have to make sure that Medicaid isn't expanded."

"I'm primarily a single-issue voter," said Falls Church resident Ray Kasey, who was in Vienna Tuesday to support Wolfe for Sheriff. "If you don't have the second amendment, you might as well kiss the other amendments good-bye."

Students from Madison High School, who had the day off Tuesday, were learning about elections and gaining credit for a government class.

Freshmen Harrison and Owen, who are part of the drum line at Madison, were busy selling White House Christmas tree ornaments to raise funds for the band.
